Hi Collective

Just been sent a nice photo of me in car doing 39 in a 30mad by Suffolk constabulary notice says I can attend a speed awareness course if I have not been on one in the last 3 years and these courses are only offered if the speed detected was up to 10% over plus 9mph above any speed limit (30 - 70) mph.

Cheers Trev
As PMB will deny , the need for cash outstrips the needs of justice. As the lack of cash starts to hurt ,expect to see 10% +x , where x depends on the need for INCOME.

3.2 NATIONAL SPEED AWARENESS COURSE
3.2.1 National Speed Awareness Course is designed to cover offences detected within the range of (10% +2) mph to (10% +9) mph over the limit. They apply to all environments (with the exception of 20 mph zones and limits) and all classes of vehicles. Any collision involving excess speed would be more appropriate to the National Driver Alertness Course than Speed Awareness.

One of the things i've still got to get my head around is that i find these courses such a lie and practically a bribe, but i'd sooner take a talking to from someone quoting from a book than take points and a fine.

A colleague of mine was done for 73 in a 70 recently and sent on one of these courses. I guess they were trying to make up numbers that week.
Or your colleague is telling fibs?
Or driving a van on a DC?

Haha, I survived it, actually not to bad and certainly not preachy, it will certainly make the more aware in future.

That's kind of what they rely on. If they made the course free but you got the same points as well, 99% of people would choose to pay the fine instead of going on the free course. The only reason anyone chooses the course is to save themselves 3 points.

I was caught at 77 in a 70 (A303, ironically on the way to Thruxton), and was offered a Driver Awareness Course.

Think about it.( possible scenario)
When SCP got chance to skim the profits, all was well. But I'd suspect that some got a little too "inventive" in what they could skim. Gordon was loosing lots of revenue, so stopped it and paid back a safety grant . With the possibility of redundancies SCP had to think of new ways to raise some money.
Hence SAC. No points, all loot going to the Quango, and back to status QUO. The sweetener is no points. As George might have said "nice little earner"

I know someone caught in 2 different (but neighbouring) force areas at 35mph and then 33mph. 2 speed awareness courses within 12 months..

Very different courses by all accounts. One carried out by ex-plod was apparently very good. The one by the AA far less useful.

Mind you, you've got to ask if it really was that good, but at least they were caught at a lower speed the 2nd time hehe

Note that not all Force areas have signed up those guidelines.

This is exactly what's happened. Suddenly all those variable and average speed camera set-ups are now working.

Colleague went on an SAC for 46 on 40 variable on the M42 a couple of months ago. It was 6 someething in the morning and traffic wasn't particularly busy. He was scammed, and it's not even anything to do with safety, it's traffic management. Most of the people on the course had been caught the same way.

I actually quite enjoyed it - far less preachy that I had feared.
