If it happens to me, these days I suddenly brake as hard as I can, pull in behind them, and follow them at a SAFE distance, because they are clearly fkwits, and who knows if they are going to try brake testing me next.

I was overtaking a car this morning, on a short section of DC linked below. They were doing 40mph with half the windscreen cleared, maybe less. They hooted at me AND flashed their lights as I went past. I have zero idea why.

idiots everywhere unfortunately,

almost as bad as the morons that sit right up the chuff of the car in front at 40mph and leave you with the choice of a 5/6 car overtake or to dawdle the rest of the route frown

but the ones that try and accelerate as you overtake are lethal, small penis syndrome i;m guessing

Some genius tried to prevent my overtake today and only succeeded in having to anchor up when I pulled into the space I had chosen to end up in. Lots of light flashing, I waved an ambiguous thanks and ignored the pleb. If he hadn't tried to close the gap he wouldn't had had to brake. Why do they do this sort of thing? Then to get all angry at me. Ironically I only overtook because another driver had pulled out on me.
Were you on your bike?

Bikers have a particular bad habit of pulling into the gap between two cars (that the second car had delivberately left for safe braking distance between his bonnet and the car in fronts boot) and then deciding they need more distance themselves and the original front car.

To the biker this may seem like a valid overtake, but to everybody who is not a biker luvvy it is much more simple - somebody has just forced themselves into their braking zone and made me brake to now allow the biker to in the gap that now needs to be a lot longer.

In no other part of life away from the road (supermarket queue/ busy footpath/ escallator/ cinema queue/ airport queue/ ski slope/ etc), would such behaviour be considered correct.
Have you ever zip merged?
Yes, I have.

Have you read the original posting, I answered?
Yes, I have.

And it sounded very much like you were condoning the action of deliberately closing a gap to prevent an overtake - apologies if I misread.

So I was just wondering how you manage zip-merging if you cannot tolerate a temporary closing of gaps - surely zip-merging is acceptable behaviour, unlike unnecessarily acting to impede another person's lawful progress.
You expect it in a zip, as it's meant to happen.

But, not in busy single lane traffic queues already traveling at the limit. (To which my example related BTW).

Unless I'm mistaken, this is your first mention on this thread of busy single lane traffic queues already traveling at the limit.

Is that not the scenario in question, rather than a filter?

Herts Biker (who's name was why I asked if he was on his bike) can hopefully confirm, but he use the word overtake, which did not make me think 'filter'.

I think Northern Bloke assumed the same thing, based on his response to mine. But, I could be wrong there too.

Well, it does seem that we're a bit at cross-purposes, so perhaps we should leave it at that.

Anyway, Happy New Year to all

Had this happen to me recently, was on a relatively big straight so just had to keep accelerating slightly longer than I'd anticipated.

Spent the rest of my journey wishing for side exit pipes to deliver huge flames to scorch the paint off the other car!

I don't get it though - if someone wasn't behind you a minute ago and now they are it doesn't tske a genius to realise they're travelling faster. Why you wouldn't let them overtake is beyond me.

Sorry, only just returned to this thread. I was in the car. Matey was content traveling at his pace, right up until he saw me pass. He then tried to close the rather large gap as I was already pulling into. I had about 20mph on him, so was not pushing in prior to his increase. I would prefer to be on my bike at these times as it would be a 70mph difference in that distance.

I've had this when riding which is very amusing because I'm in 6th cruising at 70mph catching some spaced traffic that was traveling at 55mph so I pass the first three cars no problem then a guy in an Audi S3 starts to accelerate as I'm pulling to the centre of the road to pass & starts to match my speed so I then went down two gears & passed him, then I rode at 50mph & when he tried to pass I gave him a taste of his own medicine he didn't like it much. Lots of flashing and horn blowing then I left.

Now when I was in the Maser today I had a similar thing the funny thing was when it happened I hit the sport button & as soon as this guy heard the rowdy Larini Exhaust he backed straight off.

Why the swearing if you have an opinion state it, if you don't then say nothing abusing someone via a keyboard isn't an opinion.

I agree two wrongs don't make a right but by showing the S3 driver how irritating/dangerous his driving was he'll feel less inclined to do it again.

I ride & drive down a lot of A roads if someone wants to pass I'll roll off the gas so they can get the pass done more quickly, that way it's safer for both of us.

Also loud exhausts do seem to stop a lot of the silly behavior by other motorists as they are more aware you're there & also tend to not try it on as much.

This happens to me on the motorway all the time. Particularly those drivers who seem reluctant, shall we say, to vacate the middle lane.

Come up behind them doing 0.8 or so, they're in the middle lane doing 0.75. Into the outside lane, still at 0.8, speed differential starts to ebb away, until I realise I'm doing 0.9 and still not past them. Eventually get the nose in front and pull across them into the correct lane, remaining at 0.9 for a short while. Check mirrors and they've all but disappeared behind.

It's not in the same league of danger as blocking a single-carriageway overtake, but it is still odd behaviour. Could it be subconscious, or are people really that petty?

Fair point, and I apologise.

You know that two wrongs don't make a right. I expect that, on quiet reflection, you know that you driving like a dick won't yeah the S3 driver anything at all. All it did was create further aggravation and danger. You have to keep all negative emotion out of driving because it is, after all, by far the most inherently dangerous thing that most of us do in our lives. 2 tons of metal at 80mph isn't a good starting point for pissing about in a huff.

Since I started to make a conscious effort to never let anyone's driving annoy me,I seem to see much less bad driving, I get involved in almost no near-misses or problems, and I find driving infinitely more pleasant.

I agree with you & I try to some of the bad driving but sometimes the red mist descends & I can't help but dish out a bit of retribution.

Most of the times my journeys pass without incident especially when on the bike.

This carriageway you were on, was it NSL 70mph dual lane, or 50/60mph single lane?
