No not me! Im a good boy and my rubbish goes in the appropriate receptacle!

In my local area we now have 'environmental officers' they look like regular coppers, but they issue a fixed £80 fine for litter dropping, 3 of my friends have been done for dropping roll-ups (are they not bio-degradable?)

Does anyone else have these in their area? also has anyone heard of someone getting away with it? I heard that you do not have to legally give them your details (name etc) there fore they cannot fine you???

Excellent!

Littering is disgusting in any shape or form in my opinion.

I agree, i prefer my town nice and clean, But i dont feel that a fine is the right thing. I feel it should be a warning on a first offence, then maybe 12 hours community service of litter picking for repeat offenders.

A lot of locals are upset about these 'environment officers' because it is just seen as a method of revenue collection.

Good point! And fines for letting your dog mess anywhere are acceptable! However there are not dedicated 'dog poo officers' that i have ever seen to enforce it.

Are they upset enough to stop dropping litter?

Comes under the remit of the environmental officers mentioned by the OP I would think.

When I was a wee youngling (a few years ago that would be), a mate and I were messing about with some snow spray we'd bought from the local shop and sprayed some on the grafiti wall under the underpass. Two PCSO's walked round the corner, spotted what we were doing, ran up to us saying we were getting done for criminal damage and demanding our names.

I refused to give any details on behalf of both of us, showed them it was snow spray and wiped the wall to remove some of it and show them.

They wouldn't have any of it, snatched the snow spray and placed it in the nearest bin and said they would get the Police involved if we didn't state who we were. Once again, we refused and I said to please go ahead and waste some officer's time, I'd love them to turn up mob-handed for a couple of 15 year olds with snow spray.

After continuous demanding of our details for about 10 minutes, I'd had enough, strolled off and got the snow spray from the bin. 'What do you think you're doing?' is what the PCSO snorted as I got it out of the bin. 'Leaving' is what I replied. They didn't say anything more and didn't bother following.

They didn't bother following.

Dave, do you actually need a warning (reminder) that what you are doing is wrong and antisocial? Using that logic, the police should pull us for doing 30mph in a 40mph zone and say, "I just want to remind you that the speed limit is 30mph past this school, not 40mph..." and then let us off.

Personally, I'm getting sick of seeing people chucking their rubbish out of car windows or on the pavement as they walk down the street (this includes people who think it is acceptable to flick cigarette buts on the pavement as soon as they are finished).

What's needed here is some "litter" made of dry ice!

Imagine the look on their faces when the litter has evaporated by the time the ticket is written!

This I find funny.... the locals think its revenue collection, yet to stop it they simply need to stop littering.... rofl

The council do this in Newcastle, though they don't wear a uniform for it. They just go out dressed casually and stop and fine people dropping litter, identifying themselves with a badge on a lanyard when they spot someone littering.

It's definitely a good idea, I hate seeing rubbish and cigarette ends littering the street.

In Singapore they take it a bit more seriously, if I'm remembering the amounts correctly, it's £600 for the first offence, double that for the second, then you're in serious trouble for the third. Strangely enough, the streets are utterly spotless and everyone uses the bins properly.

Why we can't have a bit of pride in our surroundings in this country is beyond me, compared to most other 1st world countries Britain is a rubbish dump.

There is another 'revenue collection' offence that could be curtailed with exactly the same approach...getmecoat

I got a fine in Hull for the same thing, 7 years ago.
I got fine through the post though, They traced me through car number plate.
Throwing cig end out of car window.
Can not remember how much fine was, but think it was £75.

It was a fair cop, I was always throwing them out, but never did again.
If you do the crime, pay the fine.

Pity this is within this thread, deserves it's very own. Perhaps titled "I am da man" (or I am Da snowman"?)

I think this may be going a little off topic here, I agree that people should not litter, and im proud that i dont. im asking if anyone has got away with it? and if its a national thing, or more just in my area?

Also the view on if the punishment is fitting of the crime???
