When I was a wee youngling (a few years ago that would be), a mate and I were messing about with some snow spray we'd bought from the local shop and sprayed some on the grafiti wall under the underpass. Two PCSO's walked round the corner, spotted what we were doing, ran up to us saying we were getting done for criminal damage and demanding our names.

I refused to give any details on behalf of both of us, showed them it was snow spray and wiped the wall to remove some of it and show them.

They wouldn't have any of it, snatched the snow spray and placed it in the nearest bin and said they would get the Police involved if we didn't state who we were. Once again, we refused and I said to please go ahead and waste some officer's time, I'd love them to turn up mob-handed for a couple of 15 year olds with snow spray.

After continuous demanding of our details for about 10 minutes, I'd had enough, strolled off and got the snow spray from the bin. 'What do you think you're doing?' is what the PCSO snorted as I got it out of the bin. 'Leaving' is what I replied. They didn't say anything more and didn't bother following.

They didn't bother following.
Oh rite, cool starry bra and all that.

£80 seems pretty mild for dropping fag butts. I would have suggested something involving water boarding, or similar.

Smokers, you bingoheads, when will you learn (a) that fagends are litter; and (b) that they won't flush down the khazi? [/rant]

I think this may be going a little off topic here, I agree that people should not litter, and im proud that i dont. im asking if anyone has got away with it? and if its a national thing, or more just in my area?

Also the view on if the punishment is fitting of the crime???

Callmedave
Don't move the goalposts - the point of your post was to complain about the fines, most other people here seem to agree with them. I certainly do.

£80.

Almost twice what the government will give you to live on for a week if you are unemployed.

The punishment hardly fits the crime ....

Solution 1: don't litter

If you cannot refrain from throwing rubbish on the ground and not in bins, see option two.

Solution 2: get a job

I prefer the £80 fine per piece of litter.

Is that cheap enough for you?

I got a fine in Hull for the same thing, 7 years ago.
I got fine through the post though, They traced me through car number plate.
Throwing cig end out of car window.
Can not remember how much fine was, but think it was £75.

It was a fair cop, I was always throwing them out, but never did again.
If you do the crime, pay the fine.
Exactly that. If you wish to litter, you run the risk of being hit with a fine. In my humble opinion, the fine should be multiplied by ten, that would really put people off, and the morons who do it still will be contributing a decent amount back to the exchequer.
The only argument i have with myself on that one, is that the Government just wastes our money anyway, so 6 and 2 3's really.

And I believe you are missing my point.

Don't litter, don't get fined. If you choose to litter and are supported by tax payers, via the government, ensure that you are prepared to divert funds from your budget to pay the fine.

You seem to want people to be sympathetic? On this topic, I have zero sympathy for the OP, nor your attempt to compare the fine against unemployment payments.

Pity this is within this thread, deserves it's very own. Perhaps titled "I am da man" (or I am Da snowman"?)

Perhaps there's a bit missing/broken off smilesmile

As for the littering- great idea. As a dog owner,I religiously pick up after my dog ,not only because it's the law,but out of respect for other park users. Sadly ,we're seeing more & more folk who don't see the need to clear up after them. Litter abounds ,with food left in plastic wrappers( not nice for dogs) ,and bottles galore, a high percentage of them broken. Again, it's parents of toddlers and dog owners who hep clear up the jagged ends. It's only a matter of time before some toddler trips and ends up with massive cuts to the face from some bottle shards. Personally, £80 is not enough.I'd include a day/few days helping out on litter clearing duties as well . Once they've seen what the park staff have to put up with ,then the message might sink in .

Generally I agree there should be penalties for littering, providing some common sense is applied.
Piece of thread falls of clothing, yup, it's littering.

USA, Dollar bill dropped and picked up is still littering.

Chuck a crisp packet on the floor, you deserve it. (Although £80 does seem a bit steep.)

I agree, i prefer my town nice and clean, But i dont feel that a fine is the right thing. I feel it should be a warning on a first offence, then maybe 12 hours community service of litter picking for repeat offenders.

A lot of locals are upset about these 'environment officers' because it is just seen as a method of revenue collection.

Callmedave
And how owudl you administer such a system? you would need a amssive database of 'first offenders' for a start and then lots of staff to administer the community service

a fine is fine. though 80 big oens is a bit steep. 30 would be more apropriate IMO.
