If one decided to try and set off a speed camera in a 30 on a push bike. What would happen?

It wouldn't flash in all probability.

I tried it and went through one at 38 in a 30, and nothing.

Even if it did flash nothing would come of it, you have no identifying plate, and afaik speed limits don't apply to pushbikes.

did you actually ascertain that it was a live camera at the time though?

Not all speed camera's are active at all times, many councils have more camera housings than cameras and simply move the cameras around the different sites from time to time.

As far as i thought the limit was the limit, even if you went past on a pogo stick at 40mph and got caught you could get prosecuted for it?? I might be wrong though.

It's all been covered before here: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=10&...

Basically the answer is that the speeding Laws do not apply to bicycles.

Idle wondering, if a car was to pass at the limit of 30 at the same time and the bike set off the camera (cycling by the car) what are the chances of the driver getting an NiP in the post?

Depends on the camera. If it were a Gatso then it could be proven by the distance travelled in the 2 pictures that the car was not speeding. I don't think Truvelos or other magnetic triggered cameras would pick up a cyclist.

Correct. There are a few specific exemptions, eg in royal parks such as Richmond Park, but otherwise bicycles are outside the definition of vehicles for the purpose of speed legislation.

You could use a radar tuning fork to tell if the camera is live smile

Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 Section 89 - http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1984/27/sectio...

"A person who drives a motor vehicle on a road at a speed exceeding a limit imposed by or under any enactment to which this section applies shall be guilty of an offence."

A pedal cycle isn't a motor vehicle, nor is a pogo stick. Nor is a pedestrian for that matter - a half-decent sprinter could break a 20mph limit, and Usain Bolt's top speed in his world record run was 27.4mph, so downhill with a following wind maybe he'd just be able to break 30mph.

There are offences of careless and dangerous cycling however, and possibly someone riding stupidly fast on a pushbike could be charged with one of those offences. They'd have to prove that the manner of riding was careless or dangerous though - not merely that it was above the speed limit.

The one on the back of Ditchling Beacon is covered up when the Lonson to Brighton is on.

They do this for a very good reason wink
I didn't know there was a speed camera by Ditchling Beacon. It must of been put there within the last 3 years, as I'd of noticed it.

reading this topic got me thinking, how big does a item/vehicle have to be to set it off?

I have a few 1/10th scale rc cars 1 or 2 of which can do more than 30mph mmmmmmmm
