Apart from all the obvious questions regarding this nasty situation, I cant understand why, if they have the perp, can they not find this little girl.
The Police are apparently searching in different areas indicated by the suspect but to no avail.
In cases like this, surely a quick application of a truth drug would help?
He's clearly a nutter, I read he got evicted for keeping hens inside his house.

Surely they must have something that makes them think he is involved though. They have been given another twelve hours to question him.
In the meanwhile if the little girl is alive somewhere time surely is critical.
Maybe a truth drug would be acceptable in those circumstances providing it did not have long lasting side effects. Torture......, maybe not.

Remember the guy that was accused of killing Joanna Yeates? He was innocent of her murder but was completely ripped apart by the press and the public for looking weird and obviously being a nutter Unfortunately there's no evidence you can rely on statements made under the influence of a 'truth drug.'
I'm pessimistic about this little girl's prospects. I'd have thought the person in custody would have realised, or been made to realise, that the only way he could help himself would be to take Police to her. Alive, that might mean a long sentence but some prospect of release. If she's already dead (at his hand) there's no prospect of that and so he would be hoping she can never be found.

Good point. Except in the rare cases of being caught in the act/on CCTV, I'm not sure why it's so difficult for people to remain calm for a few days while the Police investigate or even longer until the accused has been tried.Aretnap said:

Well, obviously that settles it. What more evidence do we need? I mean, ii it weren't for the damn Human Rights Act we could just dispense with a trial and tear him to pieces right now.andygo said:

Its a missing kiddies life that's at stake here. I'm all for human rights, but has this bloke got the right to silence when a kiddies life is maybe at stake - if its not to late already? BTW, I didn't mention torture.
I understand its the start of a very slippery slope, but it was only a question, not my statement of principle and what i believe should happen. Calm down please at the back.
If it was your daughter, just how would you feel?

Maybe not, but whats preferable, finding a little girl alive or getting a conviction.
There's no maybe about it. Truth drugs are not reliable. As a result there's no dilemma about using them. If you wanted to go down the slippery slope then there are far more reliable ways of extracting information fronm people (assuming they have that information) but most of us don't find that acceptable in our society. 9mm said:

They may or may not be reliable, but if there is a chance of finding the kiddie alive, they should (IMHO) be an option. Finding the kiddie is the primary objective to me. You can deal with the consequences of using the stuff later. OK, if there is an alternative then consider the alternative also.
So basically if there is a chance of it giving a leg up in the search it should be something that could be considered surely. (Though maybe only after substantial procedures have been followed)

How would you deal with the consequences of say, damaging the mental health of the innocent person to whom you administered this mythical drug? A bit of compo and a public apology? I bet Timothy Evans is delighted with his pardon!
What sort of 'substantial procedures' would you propose? I'd be particularly interested in what procedures you think should be followed that would allow the use of drugs on the person presently under arrest.
