My 12 year old daughter came to me with a quivering lip and held her phone to my ear.

"If I find out who the F*** this is, I'm going to F*** you Up" the voice on her answer phone said. A bloke in his 20s/30s I would have guessed. Broad London accent.

I called the number from my phone and asked if the caller had left an abusive message on my daughter's phone.

No shock from him, just a stream of abuse of how she had called him incessantly since 6am this morning and had just giggled and put the phone down. Funny thing is she was off sick today and apart from calling her friend to say that she couldn't meet her on the bus she has made no other calls. I know as I have been with her all day.

I pointed this out whilst asking the guy to stop swearing but he thinks she is lying and that when he left the message he had no idea it was a little girl that had called him. Mmmmmmm after saying that he had heard giggling

I left him to his ranting and talked to my daughter. She did ring his number after taking down her friend's number incorrectly, strange as she had added an extra digit so the phone should not have got through to anyone. She thought she was calling her friend but got nothing so put the phone down. She did this twice, it's in the phone log and the first call was at 0645 when I woke her up.

I was just going to leave it but later on my ex-wife reminded me that our daughter has a long winded girly message on her answerphone. Bloody annoying as you have to wait ages and listen to stuff about ponies before you can leave a message. All her friends do it.

So it would have been obvious to even an utter cretin that it was a kid's phone yet this person waited and left a nasty abusive message.

I'm concerned now and have called the police. I just wanted advice but they have taken it seriously, called me back and an officer is coming round tomorrow morning.

Up until my ex pointed out the girly message, I was willing to let it be and put it down to angry bloke disturbed from sleep but now I'm think, god knows what. I have saved the message and will let the police deal with it.

Sorry people just letting off steam really and wondering what might the police do. I don't really want this fella to find out where we live, he sounds a nasty bit of stuff.

The "bloke" is probably 15-17 and thinks himself to be a tough guy. No excuse for what he said, but that's the sort of st these "tough guy" kids do when they try to live the hard-man persona that their circle of tt-friends have accepted because it's "cool st, bro" (or whatever the current in-phrase is).

I, personally, wouldn't worry about it. He will most likely not call again and go on with his sad life. It's not like he has your address and a picture of your daughter that he's fapping to whilst concocting evil plans, is it?

Not strange at all, the phone will make a call as soon as the requisite number of digits have been dialled and just ignore any subsequent digits.

Her phone call log will identify how many times she has called him.

It's one of my old phones from another era. It only shows the last ten calls made. The caller called twice at around 4pm and left a message. That's how I got his number.

I know she tried to call her friend with the wrong number twice at 0645 when I woke her up.

Great, so now some bloke is gonna get a record because you gave a 12 year old a mobile.

Who knows what's going on in this chaps life to provoke such an outburst, maybe he stayed up all night nursing a sick partner, maybe he just lost a relative, maybe he is just an asshole. But seriously, get some perspective and move on...

I'm sure the Police will find time because it's the easiest 'nick' they'll have all year. They tend to prioritise those ones...

Maybe you should contact the network provider and block his number just in case?
