Valved systems are the aftermarket way forward, that way you get the best of both worlds

Unfortunatly not. Valved systems have to be checked in the same way as non-valved systems, Valve open on one set of tests, and then retested with valve shut.

I have a valved system which is extremely loud when open and i use it accordingly when my moments arise , when off its just very slightly louder than the stock oem exhaust, never had a tug by the powers that be yetttttttttttttttt , although the French and Italian police were very enthused by it

As in a lot of life situations its how you use it , make a regular nuisance of yourself and display an attitude and your bound to get an unfriendly tug

The exhaust system has been modified from that originally fitted. The replacement is not to the same design as the original.

How would I stand...

Car is a 1973 MGB, originally fitted with a 1800 I4. However it now has a V8 (Insurance and DVLA both aware and V5 updated etc) However as there was never a "standard" MGB V8 Roadster with a standard exhaust can I be pulled and find myself in court? Th system fitted is has a fruity note but no louder than my old TVR.

I didn't realise, until this thread, that it was illegal to modify your exhaust.

It is a law that IMO is currently being used outside the spirit it was intended.

Sorry for not posting earlier, but it is still ongoing

I attended the court hearing as requested (my first time ever in court) and on arrival asked "How do I plea" which I replied "Not Guilty". Then after a 3 hour wait I actually got into court.
The Magistrates asked about my case and why I was pleading N.G. I gave them the run down on how I thought the test was done incorrectly and their comment was, " This sounds a bit technical" to which I apologised and said that it was.
When the prosecution were asked on their take of it, they thought I was pleading guilty and didn't have any information to back up their story as the police officers were not in attendance.
With that the Magistrates opted for a new date which is May 29th.
Today I received a letter asking if I wanted the officers who stopped me to be in attendance on that day?
So the plot continues to drag on so will have more to come back with at the end of May

What a giant feckin waste of time.

I'd rather my government confiscated cash was used more appropriately.

To be honest I couldn't agree more. I know that the Police hate going to court over, as they say, trivial £30 FPN's so I will be asking for both officers to attend.

This whole thing has been going on since 12th Aug 2012 and they probably thought it's an easy £30 to get. I think they picked the wrong person to go up against.

Hats off to you OP, following this thread closely now. Owned a rather noisy HKS exhaust for about 3 months, quoted 'L89DB R91DB' on the HKS site. Think there will be more butt clenching going when pc plod are nearby. I wasn't aware of their powers over exhausts.

I'm entirely on your side - just in case you thought I wasn't. smile

Why are people like this hired to help/protect citizens, clearly there just out on there own power trip. Although to be fair every single Rozzer I have met has been fine.

Unless your being a dick in a Corsa flying down residential streets at 3am at WOT who would have a problem with this apparent "offence"?

+1 For taking it to court although its probably cost you more than £30 to get there and back by now?

Surely most weekend cars on PH are close to or over 100dB? I know mine are. whistle

It may not be the original one , but it could just as well be a genuine replacement system purchased from the dealership ; I have bought genuine replacement exhausts for cars of that age before because they are often no more expensive than aftermarket , will fit correctly , perform exactly as the original one , and be of decent quality .

My car is 15 years old and Nissan no longer stock the exhaust system, back when they did it was three times the price of aftermarket and neither Nissan nor the aftermarket companies state the DB levels

It obviously varies from maker to maker : Mercedes will still supply exhausts for just about any car , at least as far back as my 1957 Ponton .

Not so long ago , I went into the dealership in Glasgow and paid £77 for a rear box for my 1987 190E 2.6 , expecting to have to return the next day for it , I was pleasantly surprised to be told they had it in stock . Comparing with factors like Eurocarparts , their aftermarket systems are not always cheaper , and usually not by much .

I did go aftermarket for a system for my 500SEL about four years ago , although I could have bought a system from the dealer , I elected to have a stainless system built to the original pattern purely for longevity .

I have a friend who runs an Almera , and was shocked when he told me the price of brake discs/pads etc ; around double that of the same parts for any of my Mercs .

AFAIK I bought one of the last standard pattern exhausts for the mk1 XR2 last autumn.

When this goes my only option will be a big pipe aftermarket effort.

That is an absolute joke, if you had done that then the magistrate would have been less than impressed and told you so.

Why should the prosecution get away with it?
