As a copper, I hate this story. An idiot politician and some idiot coppers who have done not a single thing to increase public confidence or respect for 'our lot'.

A day beforehand, 2 female GMP coppers were gunned down in cold blood, yet that story is long forgotten, whilst Plebgate carries on generating news and tabloid space. This country needs to get its priorities right.

Rant over.

Excellent post.

32 year old Fiona Bone and 23 year old Nicola Hughes just doing a routine job.

Thanks for brining them to mind.

Keep ranting.

Plebgate is on-going, the two shot officers are not. We live in the moment. What else is to be expected?

The whole story from beginning to end is preposterous, 4 police officers lost their jobs one of which was jailed, a failed libel trial costing millions plus one ex cabinet minister in tatters, all because of a petty argument between grown men.

This is true. And all because the tabloids know us better than we know ourselves. frown

I don't know that much about libel trials, but does he have to cover the other side's costs? I hope so.

He does. The amount to be paid is assessed at a further hearing unless it is agreed. It is usually some 70-80% of what the winner actually spent. Somewhere I have seen he has to pay £200K within 14 days.

Also that the police 'lacked the imagination to make it up!'
I loved that comment ! In other words the policeman was too stupid to make it up , not exactly a glowing endorsement for the officer involved , guess there was never going to be any winners here

We have all now also forgotten that the timing if this episode was one of the reasons for his resignation.

I don't think a lack of imagination 'to make it up' is a bad thing. I don't see that as meaning he is 'stupid'.

I'm not so good in the dark these days and tend to sleep with the lights on.

I can equate with what the judge said about losing inhibitions when angry. Someone incorrectly claimed that I had called them an effing 4 letter word. I corrected them and said that I had in fact called them an effing 6 letter word. It wasn't good, but that colleague was trying to wind me up and I bit. It's probably the nearest I've been to committing assault. It was witnessed by two other colleagues one was slacked jawed and wide eyed, and the other that was friendlier with the colleague I almost hit was grinning.

£2 Million is quite some swear box. I guess at that price they give a receipt.

Browne who appeared for Rowland has said he wants 200k in 14 days.

The court has ordered him to pay 300k as a first payment by beginning of January.

The Fed's lawyers claim to have spent a million.

Estimates are that it will end up thick end of £3m.

Then there's his own costs. With the federation costs and those of the Sun he's in line for, it makes £4m plus damages. Have I got that right?

A little while ago the civil courts, in a fit of social responsibility, imposed limits on the amount payable in libel cases and then patted itself on the back. What they did not want to do, of course, is limit the amount of milk their colleagues could get from the cash cow. (Mixed metaphors matter - as does alliteration.)

This is an indictment of the civil courts as much as Mitchell. Probably more so. Ironically, it is the courts that have lost control of themselves as well.

Unless he has deep pockets he's probably bankrupt then?
