For clarification:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plebs

My understanding from this is that "Plebs" means ordinary people as opposed to those who govern.

Almost any word can be used in a pejorative sense, context and intent are everything.

That's what the PC did do isn't it (say he did call us plebs but I'm not going to cry about it)?
What he objected to afterwards was being called a liar.
PC Rowland appears to be about the only PC involved who wasn't a liar...

who wants to have a go at adding up the costs of this 15 second spat?

Mitch's obviously in for somewhat over £400K (and the loss of his job)

Just how much money from the public purse has this investigation/proceedings/etc?

and how many Policemen have been locked up (at what cost?) and/or lost their jobs?

Ludicrous from start to finish - thank Heavens there aren't any more important matters to worry about.

Mitchell, who was ordered to pay £300,000 in costs to the Police Federation, representing Rowland, and the News Group Newspapers, for the Sun, is also liable for the costs of the case, estimated in excess of £3m. Neither man was in court on Wednesday.
So a total of circa £3.4m. On top of that there is loss of earnings, credibility and career. He's been exposed as being a nasty bloke with obnoxious traits. Or rather, Jekyll and Hyde. The PC had accepted his apology for what he [probably according to some on here] said so between them it was all over.

The thought that went through my mind after reading the article was: "Is being an idiot worse than being a pleb?"

It was not, however, the 15 second spat that caused the court case. It was Mitchell telling lies, on TV, about a police officer, especially after he'd been cleared of any wrongdoing by a number of enquiries. I mean, pick your battle.

You missed a few steps in between the 15 seconds and the lies on TV, didn't you. There are any number of points at which this shabby chain could have been broken. One could equally argue that is was the dishonest 'witnesses' who caused the court case. Or do you believe that it was the fairies that delivered the - moderately embellished - story to Fleet Street?

The only person who caused the court was Mitchell who decided to lie.

But it's important to note that bent coppers make victims.

It's pointless for Police & Crime Commissioners to give money to victim support services, if police officers are still allowed to misappropraite the office of Constable by stitching up people because they can.

A reasonable amount to spend on maintaining some integrity in the justice system isn't exactly wasted is it though?
Better than giving it to a bunch of feral youth to spend on weed. (Source: the ten mins I spent listening to the Radio 4 program on Kids Company.)

I kind of agree, you do think how much more can it cost and how much longer can it drag on.

But on the other hand I don't want police who lie and if they're dumb enough to do it over something this high profile perhaps they'd do it over something much more mundane which could involve you or I at some point.
