Hi
Been lurking for a while and a similar post has prompted me to post. I've searched for this but not found anything appropriate.
Drove along M6 and M5 yesterday (not all the way!) and I've always wondered if the variable speed gantry cameras on the M5 are on when there is no variable speed set. Do they still take your picture - if you're going faster than 70?
Cheers!

Whereabouts on the M5 we talking about?

As far as I know there are no variable speed sections at the northern end (M5/M6 junction) YET!

Plenty on the approaches though on the M6.

The general consensus is that without the limits showing the cameras are inactive, although someone will soon be along with the tale of a mates friend who got done at 74 mph through this section.

Hmm. You are right. It's when you have avoided going onto the M6 toll. So the cameras are on the M6, not the M5. Around junctions 10, 9 and 8?

Yes

At the southern side of the link South it’s J5 to 4/4A. Although the work is now going on between J8 & J6 (spaghetti) to install “managed motorway system” and there is a temporary 50 mph limit through the works (with average speed cameras)

Despite rumours to the contrary, HADECS systems, for that is what the devices on the gantries are called, can be set to enforce the NSL when the signs are not illuminated. It is up to the police in the area to set the policy whether this is or is not enabled.

I travel J3 M5 to J11 M6 and back again Mon to Fri.

Never been flashed or seen anyone flashed in that section when the signs are not on. I've seen people doing in excess of 90 on slow traffic days (bloody rare), and still no flash!

Seen plenty of white light when they are on though!!!
