Righty ho, I've just attended a very informative and enjoyable SAC as a result of being clocked at 58mph by an un-manned camera on the A54 near Wildboarclough.
Now, my thoughts were that SPECS were average speed cameras and the signage relating to these particular cameras notes then as such, I was hoping someone on the SAC could illuminate me as to how I managed an average of 58mph on that road - I reckon that speed, on that road makes me some kind of driving god.

Clearly I'm mistaken as to the operating method of these cameras, so my question is - how the fk do they actually get you?

As an aside, I was only exceeding the limit as I'd decided that due to the lack of cables or street lighting, that the chances of the cameras themselves having a power supply was slim. Oh hoe I laughed when the NIP arrived.

Most unfortunate. The A54 in that area has a lovely long straight with few hazards, but we must all be punished for the reckless actions of the few sometimes exceeding the former NSL (sometimes not). Alas, one now has to stick the cruise on and admire the scenery frown

The irony is that it is still perfectly possible to proceed down the nearby twisty bit of the A537 at downright dangerous speeds and not fall foul of the SPECS cameras and 50 limit.

Bonkers!

Since when has the Cat & Fiddle road had its 50 limit removed? Given its popularity with bikers there is a much bigger risk of getting zapped by a radar trap. Also the A537 is a primnary route: the A54 isn't. Another reason for it to attract a police presence.

Heading west? Coming out of Buxton in the first twisty part there are places you could not touch, let alone average 50 mph. Some parts this time last year the surface was so broken up I was bouncing and hopping around at 20 mph.

Thought this would give some leeway once the A54 splits from the A537 and especially so in sight of the last camera?

Wrong.

Seems the average can be taken between any pair of cameras, not over the whole zone. Last but one and last are widely spaced and the road is more open here, and I would bet this is where you were pinged.

Like my er, "friend".

Whose mother had been telling him to slow down going in the opposite direction earlier in the evening

The av speed is between any 2 camera's, could be consecutive ones or any random gap in between. CC set at 55 has served me well wink

It hasn't (perhaps should have added 'on that stretch' to the end of the sentence).

To clarify, heading from Macc to Buxton on the A537, the first 2 SPECS cameras cover a very twisty section (the stretch to which I refer). The next few cameras (3 IIRC) cover a long straightish bit of road (moneyspinner, or a lovely view along the Goyt Valley), followed by a final camera after the final long twisty descent to Buxton.

Of course, with the SPECS cameras I see no reason not to raise the limit back up to NSL, but we have councils in charge of such things these days....frown

Oh how times change, I can remember a section up the A54 being one of the earliest competitives on a restricted road rally followed by a loop to the North through Wildboarclough and back down Goyt Valley.

Road racing if we're honest about it.

Did proper road rallying end in 1987?

The police cocked up as it was easily possible to exceed 50mph average between the camera closest to Macc and the one on the far side of the pub by taking the short cut from Walker Barn and driving the latter section within the 60mph limit. This lead to them increasing the 50mph average to a figure much higher.

I guess it's not known what the trigger speed is, but you'd have to be a nutter to average anything like 60 on that road.

O/T but there's a little sticker on a sign by the Rainow turn off which reads Lee - Cat and back 7:45. Whoever Lee is he's got big balls!
