Strange question, I've just been trying to sort out the insurance renewal.

Admiral want to know if I've been on a speed awareness course in the last 5 years.

I have been on a speed awareness course, but I have no idea when it was, I do know it was over 3 1/2 years ago as I know when I wrote the car off. I've just spent ages trying to figure out when it was from old emails etc. but I can't find any clue at all. Two questions spring to mind:

1)Any ideas how I can find out when I did it? (I think I know where I did it so I'll try and call them tomorrow)
2)Does the speed awareness course actually count as a conviction?

You can't remember when you wrote your car off? Jeez. Assume 6 month after you did it. It is not a conviction.

No.

Admiral ask, but don't charge extra for it. Yet!

did you do a speed awareness course after getting caught for speeding, or did you do one of the police improver ship courses as a result of the accident theres a difference, your premium would have been loaded as a result of the accident

Well that was a fun conversation, put the policy up by £80, the aadrivetech people don't keep records for 5 years so unless I can find the letter with the day I have to assume I did do it in the last 5 years. To be fair Admiral said they'd refund the difference if I can confirm the date and it was more than 5 years ago.

I got caught doing 35mph from memory in the limehouse link and was offered the course.

So, out of interest (and fair play to you for being honest) - how would Admiral know?

!!!!!
I thought speed awareness courses did NOT effect insurance.
It even says so on the form I signed.

Hmm
Are Admiral being naughty here ?

"Compare the Meerkats" or "Go Compare".
Admiral never seem to come up with the best quote anyway and now they might be 'trying it on' in respect of SAC's.

No idea, but I'd rather not take the chance of having invalidated my insurance...

As to whether they should or shouldn't I hope it's up to them who they choose to insure and how, they were still over £100 cheaper than the next cheapest quote.

No. It's a material fact which Admiral can ask about if they want to. It's the speed awareness folk who are being naughty if they claim that it won't affect your insurance - though it may have been true at the time as it's only fairly recently that any insurers have started to ask about them.

If the new quote is too much the solution is to switch to an insurer who don't ask about SACs or load premiums for them - AFAIK it's only Admiral group companies which currently do.

Yes they do. Our VX220 insurance increased at renewal in November due to the Wifebeast attending a Speed Awareness Course.

Since there is no possible way for the insurance companies to find out whether you've been on a SAC or not, what incentive is there to tell them?

Honesty? Actually having valid insurance?

I was with Elephant (same company as Admiral). When I called up about a renewal in February this year they asked about speed awareness courses, but said they don't load for them yet (their words!)

Bit cheeky if they do...

How would they invalidate it though?
This would only result if you showed them proof of the course or if they conducted a search through some system or other?
But I'm guessing this 'system' is a police held database and not for public/private access?

(I stand to be corrected).

We were with Admiral and shopped around. Cheapest online quotes were with Elephant and Diamond (both owned by Admiral), online screens mainly didn't ask about SACs. The Wifebeast called Admiral about renewal and was asked if any SACs and was told it would cause an increase. I called Admiral and told them what Plod/Safety Camera Mongs say about SACs not affecting cost of insurance and was told in the case of all Admiral companies that was bks. Told them we would be moving to Diamond and was informed it would affect that quote too as part of same company.

In the end Admiral was cheapest overall once SAC was taken into account. Think it added about £30-40 to the cost.

They definitely do.

I just renewed my cars and Mrs Whoami's recent attendance at one of these fecking things certainly increased my premium.

Because what's to say the speed awareness folks haven't sent one hell of a long list to the insurance companies, then I write off my car through no fault of my own and they invalidate my insurance?

I really don't get people that don't want to be 100% sure there insurance is valid, it's almost as bad as just not bothering with insurance in the first place.

It's worse, because you pay for the privilege of not being insured!
