Funnily enough I saw that story and showed it to my wife the other day. I wondered whether it would be suitable to write something to the family but didn't really know how I could get in touch.
I think any support to the young lad & his remaining family would be really nice especially from somebody who has first hand experience. thumbup

Not sure how you could go about it though.

I've just read this from the start. I didn't really twig until i got till the end but I'm from Peterborough, and i also work at Indesit.

I genuinely take my hat off to you, Sir. I know you have had to scrap the idea of a Monaro, but if you ever fancy a German V8, feel free to come and take the Merc for a spin.

That is really crap! I sometimes wonder how they come to these conclusions.

and out in 6 months I assume
Her admittance of guilt probably helped, but that still seems very low

yes I wonder sometimes where the punishment is. She'll have to live with it but only she knows how that is affecting her.

27 years to little IMO. Not only has her actions killed 2 people, a little boy now has to grow up not knowing his birth Mum and Dad.

I guess it boils down to why you put people in prison?

Do you do it to remove a threat to society?
Do you do it to rehabilitate the offender?
Do you do it to act as a deterrent to others?
Do you do it as payback for the hurt inflicted?

As awful as it is, please bear in mind she was convicted of Death by Careless rather than Death by Dangerous driving. Prior to the (relatively recent) introduction of that offence, she would have been convicted of Careless and received a fine/points/ban and no prison sentence.

This thread had slipped from my mind and I have re-read it from start to finish - I'm in the office and it isn't dusty in here, but I am holding back tears.

Your boy will grow up to be a credit to you and be well rounded - My hat is well and truly off and shown in your general direction. Giving of a deserved bking does make me smile, as that truly is a sign of full integration to your family. smile

OP, without wanting to pry into private info re sums involved, how have your dealings been with insurers, your late brother's insurers but more specifically, the insurers of the guilty woman.

Myself and others thought that they'd be quite fair and reasonable in circumstances like this whereas some took the opposite view.

Be interesting to hear what your experience has been so far (as it may well still be ongoing given the seriousness of the incident).

The biggest hero is Lucas for fighting his way out of hospital and doing so well at school and life

Number two hero is Mrs durbster. Then Mr durbster. Then the wider family

You inspire me. May your path through life be happy, healthy and successful

Durbs, you and your good lady wife are amazing.

I have no words, just admiration and respect for your now extended family.

All the best for the future and thankyou for sharing such a huge event with the PH forum.

It just seems so lenient.

I know it's hard to take emotion out of it and be objective, but if this doesn't warrant the maximum sentence, what does?

Leaving aside the issue of whether it should have been a dangerous driving charge rather than careless, this isn't even close to the maximum for the lesser charge.

exactly , which is why death by careless came about becasue of the gulf in potential punishments between careless and Death by dangerous / manslaughter/ corporate manslaughter

And you brother and SIL will be looking on very proudly as their son is raised in a home and family filled with love. They will rest in peace knowing you're all there for little Lucas
