These are on the m1 (up north between derby and Sheffield) and m25 (a1 - m11 junction) gantries in the 50mph limit roadworks - they have been added to various gantries..... Speedy cameras to catch the unobservant.........

I couldn't see this camera on my way home tonight. Has it been taken down? Where has it been moved to?
It was there this morning!
I was correct, it has definitely disappeared. I wasn't dreaming.

Yes I checked on the way home tonight too and it has gone! The one down on J8 is still there though.

Look, why don't you all just STOP SPEEDING and then none of you will need to know where any cameras are!

(I could see that some of the loonies were practically bursting trying to resist the urge to say it, so I thought I'd just get it out the way...)

There is another just appeared on the northbound carriageway between M1 J12 and J13 just as you get to the top of the hill on the LH bend near to J13. Be careful it is fairly well hidden, but also quite near to the fixed cameras on the gantry.
I hate this trap game they are playing with us, especially as no doubt some spotty geek is switching on and off the variable limit signs and creating a traffic problem, just to spite us on our commute.
The southbound gantry limits are always switched on at Luton every day even when they don't need to be, causing cars to bunch up to dangerous distances. This motorway was so much safer without them!!!!

Are they speed cameras or are they just the new form of MIDAS which operate on lasers to monitor speed and traffic flow rather than loops embedded in the carriageway which require expensive maintenance and lane closures (as will everything for maintenance on All Lane running sections)

I was wondering the other day if that is the case if they can monitor each lane in a similar manner to the Carriageway loops to pinpoint which lane the holdup is in.

I saw it flash so it's presumably a speed camera. Still not certain though.

I saw it Friday night junction 8 pointing southbound. I saw it (as I was heading northbound) as it was flashing away. I think it was about here I saw it:

It is a speed camera. There's another thread with full details.

Although we don't see any of the documents on them, we are being told that they can detect people driving through the red X's as well, which is excellent.
I think the legislation is going through presently to allow prosecutions from them, possibly also something going on about the new MS4 or Smart motorway signals as you go past them rather than under them.

Surely just use the existing variable speed cameras and set the threshold for that lane to 0 mph. Then anyone passing the X will get nabbed.

The older camera's they put behind the gantries are still in place on my patch, irritatingly, they also installed some empty boxes as well, so as to make it harder to tell which were real and which weren't

Certainly in the widening scheme on my patch, the new cameras are planned for, I would ask more, but I'm too busy turning speed limits on and off just to annoy people, sorry.
HADECS cameras are an addition to gantry variable cameras, not a substitute.

See the other thread, full details there.

No, HADECS cameras are the variable speed cameras. At the moment HADECS 2 and 2.5 cameras mounted over the lane and behind the variabe speed limit signs are in the majority. The new generation are HADECS3 cameras that are mounted on the side leg of the gantry and enforce up to 5 lanes of traffic all at the same time. They will replace all HADECS 2 and 2.5 as they come to the end of their useful life.
At this time one manufacturer has an approved camera, this will be supported by a second manufacturer at some stage.

Thread revival...

Spotted a weird camera this morning on the same stretch. I was going south and the camera was on the northbound side. I travel this route a lot and haven't noticed it before, but did this morning due to it flashing as I went passed. I guess that means it's a speed camera, but the gantry it is fitted to doesn't have the tell-tale lines painted on the road. Sneaky.
