What's Wrong With American Cops?
Discussion
Bumped into a video the other day on Youtube which then gave loads of links to US Law Enforcement Officers behaving atrociously towards members of the public. Examples included a Fire Chief subject to a hard arrest for refusing to obey an instruction to move a fire tender that was shielding a paramedic from Highway traffic as he worked on a casualty, a Paramedic who was pinned to his ambulance by the throat (his crime was to leave the back of the ambulance and TELL his ambulance driver to ignore a police officer who was dealing with a minor traffic offence the driver had committed and TELL the officer to deal with the driver at the hospital after they had delivered a patient), beating a schoolkid badly for refusing to tuck in a T Shirt, beat a kid for wearing a T-Shirt that said "The wearing of this T-Shirt is an illegal protest" while standing giggling next to a cop getting videoed by his friend, horrendous beatings, tazings and CS gassings of peaceful protesters and journalists, CS gassing and Tazing of motorists for refusing to sign charge papers, tazing wheel-chair users for "refusing" to stand up and then one has a mass of unarmed individuals shot.
What the hell is wrong over there? And why do the US public put up with it?
You watch a vid of a cop arresting a fire-chief for placing his tender in a position to protect a paramedic and get arrested because a cop told him not to and amongst the comments from the general public on forums is "Well he defied the cop. You just don't do that. He's lucking the cop didn't taze his sorry ass."
I despair.

the problem is that the USA has a multitude of different Law enforcement agencies on a multitude of different scales .
The Federal Agencies, the Military ( both Uniform Military police and the civilian investigators like NCIS), State Police and Big City Police depts are run well
the problem comes in little towns in the sticks where there is small police force, the sheriff is elected by the rednecks and keeping decent police officers is hard ( as the good ones will move to a big city / state police force or join the FBI/DEA/ATF etc )
add in the fact that in general the US police have to assume that every interaction is a 'hard stop' becasue of the way in which the NRA and the rest of swivel eyed loons in the Gun lobby interpret the 2nd amendment...

Their pursuit strategy always has me shouting at the telly, 25 cars following the "perp" for 2hours at 25mph with helicopters talking up the "lunacy" of "careening" through lights, just get in front and either box them in or sting them ffs!! Criminals could quite easily send one of their gang out to engage the cops as a diversion to rob somewhere else? Either that or they are vastly overstaffed compared to here?

They have to deal with st like this too.
Not all cops are bad/irresponsible/dangerous/disrespectful/power-mad. I have very close connections to my local law enforcement agency and the ar$eholes get weeded-out pretty quickly - and usually by fellow officers who will not work with them.

I don't think it's just an issue of the police. The fact is the US economy is collapsing and it's society seems to be imploding into different factions based on ethnic and/or political lines at an ever increasing level. The police are just made up of that society so it's obvious that those fault lines would be just the same amongst the police force.

I must amdmit, when I see US clips on those ITV4 type cop shows, the US police usually come over as a lot less professional than ours.
I think the difference is that the US police are more orientated to dealing effectively with serious often armed crime as opposed to being diplomatic in the case of much less serious issues. While in the case of the UK police it's a case of vice versa.mercfunder said:
A lot of these are lifted from news channels, which would tend to indicate that these are the exceptions rather than the norm.
Not defending bad cops anywhere, but in a society where anybody can carry a gun, sometimes its best to get the first strike in.
I agree with this but at the same time when u find youtube is full of this sort of thing it's hard not to notice there are an awful lot of exceptions happening compared with over here. As for the whole right to bear arms thing the sooner the Americans give it up the better if a consequence is the way a lot of these cops are behaving.

Hardly , it also doesn't explain while small town cops in Buttfk co. are so gung ho - when if there were any genuinely serious crime in that area the State Police and /or FBI would be taking over ...Rovinghawk said:

Kill them all, God will know his own?I have doubts.
Watch any of the cop video shows over here and they all talk about getting the element of control and dominating the situation to get compliance, it seems our American cousins take it a bit far on occasion.
