Around 300 of the 408 cops caught using bus lanes in Birmingham have been handed fines of £60 and have had to pay them out of their own pockets. The rest were deemed to be on 999 calls. West Midland Asst. Chief Constable Garry Forsyth said "officers not exempt must abide by the same rules as citizens".

Quite right too Garry and nice to see!

The ten cameras and signs introduced in September have raised £1.7 million in 3 months for the council. Probably for more cameras and signs!

Not really nice though is it, a quick giggle at the rozzers ?

Bus lanes should just not exist, why should people using subsidised transport get priority over those of us paying the effing subsidy for them ?

I'm not having "a quick giggle at the rozzers"?!?. All too often it pops up on here that the Police have far too many exemptions and/or get away with doing things that the rest of us don't. So its nice to see, that for a change, they're not always exempt and don't always "get away" with it.
The argument whether bus lanes should exist or not is an argument for another sub forum!

Most bus lanes do have exemptions for police though (and fire and ambulance!!) wink

Exactly why should anyone on a bus need to get anywhere quicker then me.

However since bus lanes do exist I don't see why police not on emergency calls should be able to use them, especially if I can't.

Some bus lanes are not just lanes but actual roads (if you know what I mean?) surely police should be able to go down them to carry out patrols etc?

Next time you 'want them here, now', remember how you laughed about this bus lane carry on, and how they'll be sitting in traffic, with less time to deal with your problem when they arrive.

If they were on call they are allowed to use the bus lanes though :s

Great stuff. I have seen too many illegally parked police cars outside sandwich and other shops.

Good for the goose = . . . . . . .

Ambulance can use them when not on emergency calls.

This, as I said most bus lanes, yellow lines have exemptions for police, fire and ambulance, so whilst not illegal to drive in a bus lane park on double lines, it needs to be weighed against perception!

Apart from the Police aspect of the story, the other main gist (something that has been rumbling on for months in Brum) is the fact that the lanes and signs are (according to the council) correctly marked and signed. However the number of people being caught seems to suggest they are still inadequate. I believe it is round by the Children’s Hospital, where I would have though some visitors have a bit more on their mind.

Buses and afaik taxis can use them.

When it comes to the various importance of different cars on the roads and the jobs they do I'd be inclined to rate police cars above taxis.

I'd say that all 'official' vehicles should be able to use them so long as they give priority to buses.

So, buses, taxis, police, ambulance, mayors cars; even council worknen.
The lanes spend most of thier lives empty, so as they are paid for by govt. oney it makes sense to let Govt. workers use them.

Even if they aren't on emergency calls I'd rather not see police or ambulance staff time wasted stuck in traffic.

I cannot for the life me understand why anyone would want the police/ambulance/anyone else paid for by public money wasting their time in traffic rather than using an empty bus lane because "I can't so why the hell should they?".

I'd rather they were allowed to use them, regardless of an emergency or not, so they can get where they're going a bit quicker and therefore have a little extra time to do whatever it is they need to be doing.

It's not rocket science is it?

I believe "riot vans" are classified as a mini bus so would be allowed in a bus lane.

A major part of an officers job is to patrol the streets when not on emergency calls, to deter and detect crime.

I know some streets are exclusively used as bus routes. Have these street to be avoided by the police incase of being fined or upsetting certain members of the public with huge chips on their shoulders?

Taxis transport people. So do ordinary cars. I'd be inclined to rate ordinary cars above taxis, or at least level pegging.

By an extension of your logic, every car should be allowed in the lanes provided they give priority to buses.

Hmmmmm
