E-Petition to stop Reduction of Motorway Speed Limit
Discussion
Please sign this e-petition to STOP proposals for 60mph motorway speed limit.
The Highways Agency is proposing to introduce a speed limit of 60 mph 'for several years' between 7am and 7pm, 7 days a week on parts of the M1, for air quality reasons. Plans to extend the scheme to several other motorways, including the M3, M5, M6, M20, M23, M27 and M62, are already being considered for next year. This is just the tip of the iceberg which could lead to a national 60mph speed limit.
THESE PROPOSALS MUST BE STOPPED IMMEDIATELY.
Motorways are a vital part of the nation’s transport infrastructure. The cost to the economy would be huge – greater transport costs, longer journey times, more congestion, less willingness for companies to locate away from London, less willingness for international companies to locate here. In addition it is unfair: transport accounts for just 20% of the UK's CO2 emissions, with cars responsible for just 11%. The motor industry has made enormous gains in recent years to reduce it’s impact on the environment, with cleaner, less polluting cars.

Done, limits need raised not lowered. My last jaunt across Europe proved this to me, in Germany on a Saturday most traffic on the motorway was moving well at 80mph I cleared the country with few issues, same for Austria, Same for Italy. When I reached the UK the road was full of faffers and even doing 70 was a challenge.

We could always play them at their own silly little game and actually drive a little slower like the yanks did in the USA in the 1980s to beat the draconian national 55mph speed limit The Highways Agency is proposing to introduce a speed limit of 60 mph 'for several years' between 7am and 7pm, 7 days a week on parts of the M1, for air quality reasons. So to any younger drivers that are not aware of what kicked off in the USA in the 1980s, all the motoring organisations in the USA who were fed up with the nanny state 55mph limit worked together and asked every member to obey the 55mph limit, well it was utter chaos, and this went on for month after month after month whilst everyone drove at or below the legal limit whilst government departments ran out of supplies as did shops and petrol stations, etc, basically the whole of the USA ground to a halt until the national 55mph speed limit was repealed.
So in the interests of B R A K E B R A K E B R A K E, let's go with the flow, slow down, and chill out, they want 30, or 20 or 10, let's do it, and when Cameron is moaning because of the traffic jams he's continually stuck in in central London, and no food in the supermarkets, or anywhere else for that matter, he might pull his head out of his ar5e, stop giving millions of taxpayers money away to overseas terrorists and to stupid HS2 projects which the country can't afford, and start looking after his own people for a change.
OK, am a bit unrealistic about him looking after the people of this country, but you get my drift for the rest. And bring on the 2015 General Election when we can finally sweep these clowns out of power. Am totally disgusted with this very cosy Lib, Lab Con that has been going on since the mid 1970s, and we desperately need political change in this country if it is to survive into the 21st century instead of becoming a third world nation.
That post started off with such promise, then just got dafter and dafter and dafter.
I don't think that cars 'working to rule' and only doing 70 will really matter. Lorries only do 56 anyway, so the supermarkets won't be running out of stock any time soon.
Perhaps better that we all start doing 100mph, if only to prove that it won't kill all the children and no one will choke to death on the cloying smog.
Simon.

I think a few new rules on motorway driving wouldn't go amiss. One thing I have noticed more and more is the number of cars, in clear dry conditions, travelling slower than artics. It's bad enough that artics overtake each other to gain a 0.1mph speed advantage over the one in front - thereby blocking two lanes of the motorway for mile after mile........but for them to be overtaking cars that have no reason to travel that slow is just ridiculous.
Perhaps it's time to introduce a minimum speed limit for cars on the motorway. Unless conditions don't permit it - or there are mitigating circumstances (like running on a space saver tyre etc) - the minimum speed limit for cars on the motorway should be 60mph.

To get to some places without going via the motorway is not easy. But your 'proposal' does not work! On the rare occasions I drive my vintage car on the motorway, I look out for trucks as following one at a safe distance makes sense. - snip
To be obliged to be 4 mph faster will result in baby elephant racing!

The scenario you describe would be a mitigation though - you are simply keeping pace with artic in front. To be obliged to be 4 mph faster will result in baby elephant racing!
I'm talking about cars travelling in the inside lane with nothing in front of them.

Driving a vintage car to a specific place which is not otherwise accessible would for me fall into the 'mitigating circumstance' category. Outside this category, anyone being overtaken by an artic is simply driving too slowly. If your car or your driving skills aren't up to keeping pace with the trucks, you should really question whether you should be on a motorway in the first place. Speeding alone isn't as much of an issue as speed differential.
