Thanks (that was a road she did not know)

With todays' cars somethimes it is difficult not to exceed the speed limit and I do not want her to spend most of her time in the car looking for the speed limit panel and checking the speed (and then maybe missing a children who is crossing the road)redface

Do you know if things like road angel etc are legal in UK (not to go around with 2 GPS)?
Tell her to give up driving, seems incompetent to me.

I have been driving 45 years, never had a ticket for speeding, because I don't.

OK, I will bite, in the off chance that the OP is not our usual Pet Troll - Given the time he has been here, I presume not.

Hand in you and your partners keys and licence on the way out please.

The laws of our land apply to everyone (well, mostly) She was done, as many people have been - Someone has to support our ailing economy - Thanks for that wink

Seriously though, get a grip and get on with it, and just pay attention in the future! It is really not that hard.

Have a nice BH weekend everyone! beer

If you forced people to stop driving if they exceeded the speed limit, you'd be the only one left on the roads! Or maybe you wouldn't, because you're massively exaggerating and do, on occasion, exceed the speed limit. wink

I based my comments on.

She was going 38 where the limit was 30.

Now she is obviously concerned and would like to have something alerting here for speed limit and controls

Are there legal devices that can be used?

The navigation system in the car cannot be updated to include the speed detectors.

What is the best legal solution? Are there devices that will alert if you exceed the speed limit regularly or at least when you are getting close to a control.

If you can't rely on the speedo to tell you what speed you are doing, and have to rely on other methods, I am not sure you are paying attention to what your doing.

I agree, I was just taking issue with the fact that you claimed never to have exceeded the speed limit in 45 years of driving. With or without a satnav, that's impossible.

No troll just wanted advices on system that alert on speed limits and camera and if they are legal (as they are not ina few countries).

While it seems the focus is to define the driving skills of my wife judging her unfit to drive because she has exceeded the speed limits once in 25 years and she is scared now to do it again (and will probably check the speedo every 2 seconds while driving)
It seems there are a lot of mister perfect here.

I guess you do not use GPS, and all the driving aids that modern cars offer and will offer even more as those are not needed. Personally I am scared by all those things but sometimes some of those can still help to drive better. Use a lot the cruise control and an help for speed limit would also be welcome sometimes (so will use wathever my wife will use)

Regarding the fine it was fully deserved as she was speeding and obviously will be paid (and I also heard that the course for the speed awareness is useful and I am sure she will benefit from it)

Thanks again for the advices received on my request bye bye and happy driving to all winksmile

Picked this up on another site

"Show me someone who says that they have never exceeded a speed limit, and I'll show you a liar, or a menace." (Austin Williams - Director, Transport Research Group)" .

Then there's the question of appropriate speed for the conditions. And in a lot of places, the limit is wrong, being based on the WRI idea of a limit, rather than the 85th percentile.

Car shopping... I had a hire car, Merc C350cdi that knew the speed limits, and did a good job of reading the roadside for temporary limits also...

This is your opportunity. Go quick.

I am sure I have, not sure 38 in 30,though,on motorways I cruise at 80, but otherwise I stick to the limits, annoying as it can be.

You mention sat nav, I don't rely on them, but cc is a wonderfull tool..

I once hired a car with not only cc, but a speed limiter in. Wouldn't it help if cars had a button you could push and set a limiter to 30 for town driving, most cars seem to,have no end of gizmos, why not one of these.

Do you find you get a lot of aggro from other drivers? I only ask because there's a stretch of DC local to me which is a 30 limit, but the vast majority of people do 45-60. They often put a camera van there, so I make sure I'm always doing bang on 30 the moment I go past the signs, which causes chaos as the cars approaching from behind are often doing double that. Other than that stretch, I very rarely get tailgated, but I often think that if I stuck to the speed limit everywhere, I'd get it all the time.

See speed limit signs. Adjust speed to match, taking conditions into account. It's not rocket science, it's a basic driving skill. Next thing we'll have is someone posting to see if there is a device that will beep to remind you to depress the clutch when you change gear...

OP, I would also suggest that you should be more concerned about her inability to control her speed all of the time she is driving, rather than just those times when she is passing a camera...

What a load of old rubbish spouting on about how it is safer not to keep looking at the speedo and instead keep looking out for children so you don't hit them. Here's a bit if advice for you wife. If she is not sure what the speed limit is when she is driving in a built up area, assume the worst and drive at 30 mph. Also tell her to make a mental note of things like the speed at which the scenery passes and the road noise within the vehicle when she is travelling at 30 mph so that if she is travelling at 30 percent more than that she will notice she is, well, going faster and so therefore it will be correspondingly noisier.
People that bang on about being clumped for "only" doing 38,39,40 or whatever in a 30 crack me up. If you cannot drive a car without keeping your eyes on the speedo to control the speed you shouldn't be driving. IMHO of course...

Can't say I get aggro, then again up in Aberdeenshire maybe we have a different attitude to limits, who knows.

I just get up to 30 or whatever it is and put on cc, some change lanes and cruise past, but not much faster than me.

At least you know you won't be hit with a ticket.

You should be ashamed, or.maybe your life is just that dull, you.think.it has humour attached.

I actually.think, it's just dull, what a full filled life you must lead.

Bless.

You can get an Android application from Road Pilot that mimics their stand alone GPS device.

I have an AA branded one, £9.99 for three years when I downloaded it. It's really rather good.

Whoops, just in case someone remembers my post eons of time ago, I was once did for exceeding 30 in a military vehicle responding to a call out to a bomb found on the beach, blue light on, but didn't wear with Mr. Plod, £30 fine, about 74.
