Speed traps how to avoid
Discussion
So finally my wife got a speeding ticket and she is preparing for the course.
It is really unbelievable as she is the last person who would be speeding with the car (she was coming back from A&E were she took a friend and was going 38 where the limit was 30 (straight line ourside town)
Now she is obviously concerned and would like to have something alerting here for speed limit and controls
Are there legal devices that can be used?
The navigation system in the car cannot be updated to include the speed detectors.
What is the best legal solution? Are there devices that will alert if you exceed the speed limit regularly or at least when you are getting close to a control?

My TomTom satnav will display the current speed limit & can also sound a beep if you are exceeding it; it also changes the background of your current speed to red if you are over the limit. It works well.
I rarely use it except if driving in an unfamiliar part of the country because it also has speed camera warnings - both fixed & mobile.

Being realistic, sometimes it's hard to spot speed limit signs, especially in some built up ares with lots of other street furniture.
I was on a speed awareness course couple of years ago ( I missed the 40 sign in a reduced speed SPECS zone on M4 ), but mostly older people were there, and mostly because they genuinely didn't realise what the speed was on the road they were were on.

Thanks (that was a road she did not know)I rarely use it except if driving in an unfamiliar part of the country because it also has speed camera warnings - both fixed & mobile.
With todays' cars somethimes it is difficult not to exceed the speed limit and I do not want her to spend most of her time in the car looking for the speed limit panel and checking the speed (and then maybe missing a children who is crossing the road)
Do you know if things like road angel etc are legal in UK (not to go around with 2 GPS)?
The Tomtom devices are good, but it's overkill if you've already got a sat nav (as you said you did). I bought a roadpilot ( http://www.roadpilot.com/) several years ago (because I already had a built in sat nav), and it's very good and very compact.

Don't assume that the various satnavs are infallible as far as telling you what the particular speed limits are.
I had occasion to drive my wife's car to Lincolnshire from Leicester recently & used her TomTom out of curiosity as its a route I know well & I wondered if the satnav would try & take us a different way. There were a couple of signed speed limits on single carriageway roads - 50mph - where the satnav was showing NSL 60mph.

And I can't agree with you that it is difficult not to exceed the speed limit. A measure of awareness and willingness to comply is all that is required.
Thanks for all the good advices!
No I am not concerned she pose a risk for her and the others

Yes.
And your parents always respect those limits when they push you around in the pram?REALIST123 said:
Are you sure she should actually be driving? She doesn't seem to be able to cope with the basic requirements for being safe.
25 years without a fine or causing an accident and one speeding ticket while taking a friend to the doctor for an emergency? I am sure she is safer than most of the people hereNo I am not concerned she pose a risk for her and the others
