I was travelling south on the M1 on Wednesday night. It was just where the M18 joins and the normal 50 restriction ends.

The next gantry after the roadworks was set to 40mph and there was no obvious reason, my brain had registered 50 but luckily clocked it at the last moment.

It flashed 4 other cars in the few hundred meters I could see the gantry.

Very easily done.
I've said it before but it bears repeating:-

A couple of years ago, we were heading down the M42 back from the airport, it was gone 10pm, and the gantries are all on for no reason (if you were in a busy stretch you could see ooh, at least 5 other cars!), and they're yo-yo'ing up and down as you pass each one - 50 / 60 / 60 / 50 / 60 / 50 / 40 / 50 ...

It was late, we were tired, we just wanted to get home, and this sh't wound me right up! Had very little time or support for the HA ever since...

These new HADECS-3 are on the M6 near Staffs now as well, except they're not on gantries, they're on the poles used to display the variable speed limit in one place only off to the left of the carriageway. And as usual, they're half-hidden.

Can someone remind me which government it was that promised no speed cameras on motorways again?!?

Confusing isn't it, when the overhead gantries are blank but the signs in the middle are flashing 40. I was in a single lane motorway where the rest was shut for 'roadworks' and I slowed to 40. I started a massively long tailback that went on for as far as I could see in my mirrors. As it opened up to 3 lanes, the signs in the middle were still flashing 40, gantries said nothing and everyones speed was all over the place, some sticking with me at 40, some powering off into the distance. Still don't know if those orange flashing signs in the middle meant anything over would = ticket but played it safe.

Well if you had known what those signs meant, as you are required to do, you would have been a lot safer wouldn't you?

I know that the sign meant advisory speed limit. But wether that means you'll get ticketed for going over I'm not too sure.

How about you stop being a moody bd and educate someone who isn't sure?

Here you go: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploa...

If you are caught in excess of the advised speed and you are detected doing so at the hazard then you may well be dealt with for careless & inconsiderate driving.

When you are not sure of anything it really is your responsibility to become educated. You're welcome.

In my experience, unfortunately, there is a high proportion of people who know it all. They will never become educated!

Thanks for that. Yes I know it is my responsibility but to me it's still not clear.

Even in that guide it says 'Temporary maximum speed advised' but you're saying that going over could result in prosecution. So is it advised meaning a recommendation and your choice or is it an enforceable speed limit?

Just ignore it unless you can actually see a reason not to. But do look for that reason.

Not sure what you two are arguing about, but I was talking about the gantries - the legal red-ringed signs with GATSO's behind them...

My observations may just be coincidence. I have a Snooper 4Zero installed in my car

When I travel round the M25 (from lets Say Junction 15 to Junction 8) the Snooper only activates on certain overhead gantries - when all have cameras ?
They don't all have cameras.

It's quite interesting to read our local newspaper as they report speeding fines on the Essex section of the M25.

This is just the latest batch, but there's a pattern here, it seems like the gantry cameras are set to catch people at >100. There are a few like this every week.

http://www.essexlive.news/who-s-been-in-court-from...

, of North Street, Romford was fined £440, given six penalty points, and ordered to pay victim surcharge of £44 and £90 costs for driving along the M25 at Epping at a speed of 100mph, in excess of the 70mph speed limit.

i went through some this week that was 50, 50, 50, 40, NSL.

Why would it dip to 40 at the last minute and then immediately to 70? As usual there was nothing there.

It's all bks and IMO frequently dangerous on many occasions.

Would the FPNs for lesser speeds feature in the local rag?

Assuming a blank display = NSL. I've seen NSL, 50, NSL.

I've not noticed any, which is what makes me think they ping at a ton plus.

No court for FPN or SAC, so unlikely to be mentioned in court, therefore unlikely to be mentioned in local rag "Who's been in court ..."

Maybe. But there are others in the local area that get reported that you'd think would be FPN but for whatever reason go to court. I've yet to see one for this area, but it's not a scientific survey!

I'll keep reading smile

Yellow is still not that visible if hidden behind a tree! Selective foliage management observed in several locations.

My other observation is that they are mounted quite low, so a stream of HGVs in lane 1 will offer quite good cover wink
Hard to spot in the dark too now the Winter months are closing in! Bit of a shock for peeps blasting along the M25 at midnight etc ...

You could always ask the relevant scamera partnership via FOI for numbers.

It's a shame that group that used to set them on fire with tyres filled with petrol seem to have lost interest. Probably got old, and their replacements are more interested in their phones
