We used to be able to cash it in but it was stopped a few years ago.

I never make an over allowance to the value of the unused VED when pricing a car. If its got some on it - great.
When it costs £500 to tax some of the cars we sell unexpired VED is a consideration. With the current system buyers and sellers usually sort things out amongst themselves either they agree to leave the tax on in exchange for not reducing the price or buyers agree to pay the pro rata value of the unexpired tax.

With the new system once everyone understands and accepts how it works - in so far as DVLA have decided thus far, the financial aspect of it will be of no concern. People pay a monthly fee which varies from car to car but essentially they still pay a monthly fee, just for their new car. My concerns are for the mechanics of it all from a dealers perspective.

The issue from a loss of money point of view is what happens during the transition with dealer stock taxed cars? The answer is no one here knows because DVLA themselves don't know. There are some simple solutions including keeping existing tax discs and only implementing the new rules when they expire (this would also reduce pressure on the new system) but we don't know and my suspicion is DVLA haven't thought things through. In their simple world such problems don't exist.

Hopefully I will have some answers when my enquiries are replied to but it does seem a bit of a shambles relatively close to implementation day and still very few people are aware of the change.

It's only been publicised for SEVEN months since it was announced...

The news section on Pistonheads, magnificent though it is wouldn't generally be read by your average car owner or indeed motor trader.

As trade plate holders DVLA know we are car dealers and are likely to be impacted by the change. I would have expected national advertising for your average Jo in the street and for all trade plate holders to be contacted.

Over the last couple of days no one I've talked to about this was aware of the change. So what ever DVLA has done to date it isn't working.

It's not as if AutoTrader's the only source announcing it, either.

Even local press covered it...

And if a member of the motor trade doesn't keep up with widely-announced legislation changes that happen to affect the motor trade...

You guys are so right and I'm just an idiot who goes round with his eyes closed. However do I manage without trawling through the quieter corners of the internet?

What baffles me is why everyone else I speak to in the real world, away from the internet and Google at their finger tips seems to be unaware of the change. Or is it that I just happen to knock around with that 1% living on the margins of society?

Rest easy DVLA it seems all is well and it is only me and the chap I spoke to at the DVLA customer enquiry office who don't know what's happening !

I would imagine most if not all traders would love to see the back of trade plates

I would much rather under the new system they be scrapped and instead just have a road tax exemption for traders or cars going through the trade , trade insurance should provide a good way to prove and monitor that the car is in trade use. Job jobbed !

And when the country is blacked-out by power shortages, energy blocked by the Russkis, strikes, etc.?

What do we do then? Not an impossible scenario. Remember the '70s?

I think what fangio is saying is that in the event of a nationwide power cut, the major problem will not be people dying in hospital because their dialysis machine won't run, or the difficulties of getting all the aircraft out of the sky safely without an Air Traffic Control system, but the fact that you won't be able to tax the car you are thinking of buying.
