Tax disc arrived today, ah well empty windscreen was nice while it lasted.
You can empty it again in 3 months and 8 days time!I can't see why people have so much of a problem with having to display a disc (paying for it maybe, but displaying it?)
The only problem I ever had about displaying a tax disc was trying to get the damned thing into those round tax disc holders with the three cut-outs on the front face! - What a pain trying to gently roll the disc to slide it in!
The first two flaps always got your hopes up, but the third flap was always a pain!

It's got nothing to so with the public failing to display. It's to save the Government the cost of producing and issuing the disc and they have thought up a clever wheeze to get an extra months fee when a car changes hands. So much for them promising no underhand taxes huh....I can't see why people have so much of a problem with having to display a disc (paying for it maybe, but displaying it?)

My comment about people having a problem with having to pay for the tax disc was actually about the ever increasing cost of it rather than people failing to display. The vast majority of people pay for their road fund licence every year but do so begrudgingly and then moan about how much it is costing them. (Of course, some owners of older cars get to gloat that their gas guzzler costs a third of what it costs for a modern equivalent, and owners of cars old enough get to gloat that they pay nothing at all!)

As far as I can work out, if I car a 2nd hand car from a private seller
I will now always need to factor in paying tax.
I can do it straight away -24/7 on the web or phone (was a faff before when you had to take documents down to PO so not a bad thing as such)
I presume the way around double taxing is that you put the changeover of the v5 in when the old tax is about to run out? I doubt many peopel will go for that as it might mean tax changeover 3 months after the car is sold.
As far as I can work out though - if I buy a car and just drive it hoem as long as I have insurance it is fine because the paper to send off to change owner details is not yet sent by the seller (i.e vehicle is still in their name and I am using their tax) - it is only when the paper gets to DVLA does the tax get cut off (i.e when chnage of registered keeper occurs).
I presume change of registered keeper doe snot happen instantly if you call the tax line.

Why would the French police care?
In EU you are supposed to have proof that you've paid vehicle tax in your country of origin . . . that used to be the tax disc. It will now have to be a print out from the web site you buy it from or a print of an e-mail.I bought a load of tax disc holders as freebie giveaways a while ago. Got rid of most of them now (in the nick of time)!
Bad news for the guy who makes them though. His business has just gone down the toilet.
Classic cars are going to look a bit odd with no disc though, wonder if there's a business opportunity for someone to print retro ones to suit the age of the car?
