[quoteGood call about the combined insurance / MOT disc. Obviously it would need some serious thought to get the security measures correct so people couldn't forge them Must be pretty easy to stick a hologram on it, in any case it's not like it's difficult to forge an mot certificate at present is it?

it is easy to go out and find plenty of offenders driving way over the speed limit, not wearing seat belts, driving without insurance, with bald tyres etc, so I don,t realistically think quota's are an issue. It just seems like a gripe again.
That's it John, go out and get the people who: Don't wear seat belts Drive without insurance Drive with bald tyres I fully support the Police in doing this but they are more content to sit there with a laser gun on an open dual carriageway and pick people off at random. I just wish it could all get into perspective a bit. Not even 1/4 of a mile fom the cop shop is our High Street, Bromley high street to be exact. At weekends it all gets a little out of hand with the 17 year-old scrotes in Ben Sherman shirts getting rowdy after their 2-pints of Fosters quota. Whyu can't the Police increase their presence down there by having a few officers wandering up and down making sure the 70mph Nova-racers can't hack it up and down the high street and keep the peace with the more rowdy members of our youf society. I know it wouldn't be a pleasant job but, at the end of the day, that's what the Police are SUPPOSED to be there for i.e, stopping crime happening in the first place. Wouldn't it be great if they could stop a GBH case happening in the first place rather than doing **** all, letting it happen and then not be able to do a thing except send a "victims of crime" leaflet out and say "sorry, we are understaffed. All our officers are out with LiDAR catching people doing 60 in a 50"

I make point number two as a cyclist who has been hit by a driver not letting me know where he was going. And as a driver who saw a pedestrian hit, again due to non indication.
Had the same thing twice before when filtering through traffic on my motorbike a few years a go. Thing is, because you are filtering the motorist will generally get away with it. Agree completely on the indication thing. ALSO, this thing with the lane hoggers should be taken up by the Police - John, don't you guys have a suggestions box or something???

Personally I would like the law changing so that traffic officers would have the option of requiring a person to take an 'assesment drive' if they are seen driving in an incompetant manner, if they fail it they should then have to be re-tested. this system is used for Police drivers who are involved in a minor prang or if you pass the advanced test but don't use the authority for 12 months ( ie if you don't actually work on a unit that uses fast cars!!!). While I'm on the subject I also think that the Police should have a discretionary power of arrest if you do not carry your licence and insurance with you. So if anyone wants to include that in the letter to the MP feel free. Oh and while I'm on a roll I think the power to seize an uninsured car would be quite a good idea, that way we could get rid of all the old crap on the road that seems to pass hands for a couple of hundred quid, most of this type of car is used by the criminal element(burglars etc) and in addition it is also responsible for a large amount of the fail to stop RTA's. Right finished.
Agree with all of that. Get it in that suggestions box John!!

The traffic unit I work on has 3 PC's per shift we cover an entire division that is geographiclly massive. The other shifts which do 'normal' Police work have about 40 PC's 5 Sergeants and 2 Inspectors, I don't have time to sit round with a speed gun I just do that when I get chance. This will not be for a while as when i go back after my days off I have got to finish the paperwork for the 9 prisoners my colleague and I arrested on the 3 nights we have just worked ( 5 for TWOC, 1 aggravated TWOC and 3 drink drivers) sorry no speeders.
