garage of my brother and my stuff gone missing, halp!

OP - what do you reckon it was all worth? Does the landlord have the means to repay you? If he doesn't it would seem pointless to pursue him.
Personally I'd go see him and ask him to get your stuff back (unlikely) or £'s to the value of OR you will report him to the Police for theft. Seems there has been an intent to permanently deprive you of your items.

Provided the OP's rent was up to date I think the owner of the lock-up is in trouble - http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2001/561/schedu...
He can't just assume the OP has moved to Scotland and make no effort whatsoever to establish contact.

He's not a "landlord" as such, he just owned the tin garage, the plot is owned by the council where there's about another 20 garages.
As for the value, roughly 4k easily, though I would struggle to document most of it I do have pictures.
I don't personally know the guy, wouldn't recognise him on the street, waiting for my mum to confirm the contact details, but he seems to have new cars and a private plate, believe he is a retired mechanic living in an ex-council maisonette.

Could have been worse. I saw someone on another forum once trying to back up an argument about insurance with a link to a porn site. Seemed iike an odd combination of things to be doing at once.
Why? Everyone knows the insurance industry are a gang of wkers Only joking. I actually understand how insurance works and choose to purchase it.

Don't you need the V5 to scrap a car legally?
Yes- I scrapped a car not so long ago and all the scrappy's asked for the V5/tear off etc. Sounds dodgy to me. OP - keep a lookout on ebay and gumtree etc. Don't ring or email with your phone number- use another. Also look at recently completed ebay sales in your area (if its already been sold).
I don't know how you've stayed so restrained with this bloke.
