Quick explanation - I'm a named driver on my Mums car. While driving the car I had an accident I admit was my fault.

The Third party claimed for the repair of his vehicle against my insurer.

I had his insurance call up and ask what happened etc.

Bit clueless here, but who does the accident affect in terms of insurance?

My Mum is the policy holder, but I were driving/at fault.
Will the claim be against my mum as policy holder, or me as the driver?

I ask because I'm soon to be going onto my own insurance policy on my own car, and I'm unsure on whether I have to add a claim or not.

Thanks,
Luke

It's against you, but it affects your Mum as her policy is covering the claim.

You do.

I had something similar driving my GF's car about 2 years ago.

I found the best thing to do was to explain it thoroughly to the insurance company when renewing and let them decide.

"I had the accident, but it was my GF's policy so she made the claim".

For me, it was a little more complicated because the car was transferred to me and it became my policy.

In the end, the computer didn't understand the situation, so it was put down as my GF who had the accident in her policy - although there is a note in my policy about it.

You say your girlfriend made the claim?

This is where I'm unsure, as I didn't claim to have the car fixed. It was the third party who made a claim, so I was questioning who the claim is against.

I think as you say, calling to explain will be my best bet.
Thank you,
Luke

I did the same thing last year, had an accident whilst driving someone elses car. They claimed on their insurance for the damage, so they have to disclose a claim but not an accident when they renew and I have to disclose an accident but not a claim when I do mine.

You will do the same.

Okay - to be clear, it was her policy that had the claim against it (there wasn't a claim against any policy I had).

Why didn't you get your mums car fixed on the claim, as she may have already lost her no claims( if any at all)

But the claim is on your mums policy, so she loses out for 3 or 5 years, depending on insurer.
You also lose out for the same amount of time...have you had any accidents etc!

you have had an accident
your mother has had an insurance claim made against her
i don't believe you have had an insurance claim against you as you were not the policy holder.
most insurers ask about accidents and claims to cover this situation

As above, pretty straight forward tbh. You'll be asked:

Have you had any accidents in the past 5 years?
You say "yes"

Your mum will be asked have you made any claims in the past 5 years?
She says "yes"

This.

My understanding is that you're both going to need to declare at renewal.

And you'd be right. It's simple and the OP has been advised this by most if not all so far. I guess he keeps asking hoping for that one person who says "don't worry you don't have to declare it"

Wishful thinking !

Thanks all for the response. I'll bite the bullet and cry come renewal
