I heard that if the police catch you driving with bare feet or wearing flip flops they make you walk on hot coals, some time they taser people halfway across just for fun.

I get in the car in flip flops then take them off and push them under the seat and drive barefoot. Its an alien feeling when you first try it but it quickly becomes normal.
This.

In fact it quickly gets to be the case that you feel in far greater control when driving barefoot.
We spend alot of time all over Europe in the summer and many of the other truck drivers do the same in regards to barefoot, flip flops or similar in the hottest places.
I cant get comfy in them, so just stick with trainers whilst driving.
I have driven i flip flops but i find it deadly! There is no feel and they get stuck on the other pedals and the car mat, really dangerous.
You do get great feel when barefoot, as you would imagine, it can be uncomfortable on long journeys though, plays havoc with my heels.......

The law only requires that you are in proper control of the vehicle, and that's what the wearing of flip flops might prevent. For the prosecution to show that it is in fact the case.
