What was reason for her to change their minds?
Sounds Like it won't end well.
1. Sounds like the neighbour's Mrs is a witch who is unable to see that they need to be responsible for their actions like everyone else in the World.

2. Agreed. Regardless of the out come, now that their neighbour is trying the ostrich / I'm not paying approach, there is going to be bad feeling.

OP your life, your rules. IMO (and this is not legal advice) you need to make the call now. either:-

1) Stick £1,000 on the side and fight them tooth and nail the whole way through insurance or the courts and hopefully win.

2) Pay up for the repair, sand them a copy of the bill to reimburse you and see what happens. I expect nothing but it's times like these that you realise you have just spent £350 to learn that your neighbour is a cunit and that when you are having a summer party / work done / they need parcels taken in as they are not home / etc their comfort (within the bounds of the law) is not your concern.

Easy for me to say but litigation is not for the feint hearted nor those who have many demands on their time. If it isn't a good size four figure sum plus involved the best advice is usually to walk away. Sure you'll be money down but until you have seen a few of these and how they tend to go and how much they take over people's lives you have no idea just how much value you should place on your sanity and free time as you will find both quickly consumed when involved in litigation.

Thanks for all the replies folks, they've had another change of heart and posted a cheque for the full amount through our door this morning, I've not spoken to them yet as this happened while I was at work but I plan on popping around this evening to say thank you and hopefully mitigate any ill feeling.

FWIW this was the state of the car -

This was all down one side, on the roof, bonnet, glass, seals... was not a job for the feint hearted

If you had turned the car round and had the same on the other side it may have looked ok, and like an expensive wrap job.

Just a thought.

Perhaps they need a circuit judge to conduct affairs and breaker a deal to defuse things?

The op said it was water based creosote, so not creosote.

But it can still be bought from farm shops and the like.

At least you have a cheque now and they have seen reason.

Glad you got it sorted - I had EXACTLY the same thing happen just over 2 years ago (almost to the day):

If it was genuine Creoste which has been then it is oil based and it ain't coming off anytime soon.

If it was Bartoline Creosote Substitute then it'll be oil based and it ain't coming off anytime soon.

By the sounds of it, it's already off.
