Easy for this to turn into a traveller-slagging thread (and believe me, I'd be in the vanguard) but can we keep this to facts please as I need some input.

Long story short: We had a family of travellers (how I hate having to call them that) pitch up on our village green a few weeks back. Despite significant pressure from the local residents, the authorities took virtually no action. Parish Council > Borough Council > County Council, all that was done was that the county council "gypsy officer" visited the site and apparently got an assurance that they would move off 3 days later. Of course, the gyppos stuck 2 fingers up at that and stayed several more days before leaving overnight of their own accord. They were there for about 2 weeks.

Earlier this week another resident alerted the parish council that they were back scoping out the green. Surprise surprise, nothing done, and now overnight they have moved what looks like half of Dale Farm onto the green, apparently smashing down a fence or gate to get in.

Last time, "welfare" issues and "travellers' rights" were cited but not specified. What I would like to know, definitively, is what actual rights, of any sort, these vermin have? We all know, with our Daily Mails held high, how minority groups like this can trample roughshod over respectable taxpayers, but genuinely I want to know what they can and can't plead and get away with. Perhaps then the local authorities can equally be educated (funny me…).

Thanks.

Having experience illegal traveller camps twice near to where I lived, all I can say is: KILL THEM WITH FIRE!

Poole council recently put aside a few million £s to create barriers to entry at their preferred sites (huge bolders). We'll see if that works.

Can one of our resident lawyers answer me this please: Is it possible for a local authority to take out an injunction which prohibits travellers from pitching site anywhere within the curtilage of a locale, e.g. a village boundary? Possibly too much like common sense, but surely then they could immediately be evicted without all the usual pussyfooting around while they have free rent for a fortnight whilst they pillage anything not bolted down?

Until the legal right to impound caravans from "travellers" happens then nothing can be done, as a soon as their moved off they just end up someone elses problem down the road. Will it happen, no, usual human rights issue and bugger the rest of us.

"A group of gypsies has been driven out of a Belgian town after the mayor hired a DJ to blast rock music at them.

The Roma had amassed 30 caravans at a site in Landen, a small town with a population of less than 15,000, around 30 miles east of Brussels, with no plans to leave.

But after a DJ played Dire Straits at a volume of 95 decibels - equivalent to the sound of a pneumatic drill from 50 feet away - they caved in and agreed to go."

Of course in our country the DJ would be served a noise abatement notice withing 15 minutes and the police would charge the Mayor with encouragement to harass or some such nonsense.

I'm fairly certain it is - a few years back I'm sure the Enterprise Zone in Swansea had some such applied to it. Not sure of the details as it was a long time ago and I wasn't really bothered by the problem.

That was on Council owned land.

Yes, limp wristed wets here wouldn't have the guts to do that. What a great idea though.

Want to know how it should be done? Learn from the French:

I love the French.

Follow the rules that suit them and ignore the ones that affect them negatively.

I thought they did have rights if they occupied certain types of land but these were nullified if they obtained entry by breaking a barrier of any sort ???

There have been one or two occurrences of this sort round my way where they stayed a while if the occupied common land but were very quickly removed if they have broken a gate, barrier, lock etc. to gain access.

The sooner we can stop regarding these people as a "race" the better. Romany is a race; Traveller is a lifestyle. Banning a lifestyle is not racial discrimination.

Your attempt at a joke is in rather poor taste on all fronts.

Hilarious, given that that's exactly how the travelling folk also seem to live their lives!

Except the travellers do it by effectively stting in everyone else's garden. The French do it to protect their own property.
