My missus has just bought a car...However, it has been off the road (SORN) since end of December as the previous owner is in the army and has been away.
He is currently not in the country and one of his colleagues advertised and sold the car on his behalf.

As he is not around, neither is the V5/c...DVLA are saying that it takes 3-6 weeks to get a new V5 in her name and the car cannot be taxed until the new V5 arrives.

We are attempting to contact the previous owner (by text) to see if he can get a copy of the V5 to anyone we can collect from, but it isn't looking hopeful.

Is there any other way of taxing the car (or at least being able to use it) in the short term?

How do you know you haven't bought a stolen car?

Errr...thanks, we have already filled that in, but it takes 3-6 weeks, apparantly and they will not issue a tax for the car in the meantime

Frankly, we don't....but it was only £375 and the sellers mate was totally upfront and we do have the details of the owner/keeper (as well as a signed bill of sale)...it is just he has recently returned from Germany and is now on holidays in Egypt until end of August...He is happy for us to apply for a new V5c or we can get it from him on his return...but we really need to use the car in the meantime.

I did think it was possible to just apply for a new V5 when you purchased the tax...but apparantly only if you haven't changed any details

yep...especially:
If you are not the registered keeper of the vehicle you may not be able
to tax until you get a V5C in your name

frankly, seems like a ridiculous situation...The car is insured and, as of this morning, MoT'd and it isn't as though paying for the tax or being the registered keeper has any bearing on who is the *legal* owner of the vehicle...

Wow, thanks for that...I think the word "may" possibly confused me...it gives the impression, to me, at least, that it may be possible to tax the car without a V5/V5c, also.

Doesn't alter the fact that there is an issue with the regulations/procedure

If the seller seems honest, tax it online, then get him to post it when he returns.

It will be taxed, but you would be failing to display.......

You can only apply for a new V5C when you purchase the tax if you have the new keeper supplement.
