Were you in all day every day, sat by your phone? I sometimes send letter updates out because people don't answer their phones to withheld numbers, have no answerphone facility, and are never at home to speak to in person.
We send letters as a last resort, usually try and phone first, then email - if we have details, and then finally send a letter.
200 plus crimes a day - every day - coming in - we can only make so many attempts to contact in cases such as this prior to closing the report down. The letter should contain the officers details should you want to call and discuss the case.

In relation to the investigation and the cctv - if he's not on there - then he's not on there. Town centre cctv cant cover every square inch all of the time - vastly overated resource thanks to whats shown on the telly raising peoples expectations of what it can and cant capture

I think it really depends on the constabulary you are dealing with. Every single interaction I have ever had with the Met has been negative whereas it is the complete opposite with my local force.

I reported a 'crime' to the Met and it was duh! Computer says NO. I rang up my local force and pronto, a PC was around to take a statement, suspect was arrested and I was invited in to pick him out from a video parade. The lady PC has also updated me by email at every occassion, personally dropped letters through my door at home and the icing on the cake is she is well fit!

I thought you might have been on about my force...until that last bit, then I knew it couldn't be.
