Just an update.

We had a go at fitting the tints ourselves and managed to get all windows done in 2 hours. It was surprisingly easy compared to what I was told. You don't even need to set it right first time because you slide the tints around the window using a water spray to get them exactly where you want them so there's no bubbles at all.

Although the 70% for front passenger windows is lighter than the 5% I put on the others the difference is hardly even noticeable. All the tints are much lighter when looking out from inside the car so nighttime driving is still safe.

Cost us just under 20 quid for the lot. I was quoted £180 by a garage and the misses was quoted £280 by another!

I would honestly recommend having a go at it yourself if anyone is thinking about it.

Why ask for opinions, if you're going to go ahead and do it anyway? You do know that what you'll have fitted will be illegal and make you a magnet for plod? Also the idea that it's lighter when looking out, than looking in doesn't affect the legality of it and I doubt that's true anyway.

Have you declared this modification to your insurer? It is a modification and if undeclared could leave you with a policy that won't pay out for any damage you cause to your own car and potentially problems with damage you cause to others too.

Sounds like a quality job.

I look forward to seeing your peeling, purple tint's on a road near me soon.

Why would anyone want tinted windows anyway? I bought a car with tints once and they were horrible, made it feel dingy and cold inside and really affected rear visibility, the first thing I did was remove them. They make a car look tragically council estate too, surely this is a look one would want to avoid?

Depends really.

A factory tint on an appropriate car can look perfectly acceptable. A DIY film on a chaved up corsa no so much...

My mate has a m3 and got tints done all around they look good and they said there 100% ok on front.....get pulled few months later and there 8% to dark at front and had to pull them off. I think if your having tints your always going push it with police but on some cars they look nice and I will be getting them on my e36 soon

Done mine recently too. Aided by taking the whole frame and glass out of the door wink

I went with the 5% Limo on everything from the B pillar back. Looks ace. Cost about a tenner on ebay.

I have heard some of the cheap films aren't UV stable, but this was a test of my ability to apply the tints, so a cheap film allowed for plenty of mistakes.

If they go purple, well, I'll buy a better quality film next time, and with what I've learnt this time round, I'll do an even better job next time.

I quite like the 5% tints on the back windows of my car. Means if i have the seats folded down with stuff in the back, no one can see it.
Keeps the car cooler in the summer.

Reversing at night time in unlit car parks isn't very good though.

Our Focus Estate has factory tints for the read windows and hatch. Keeps the rear nice and cool, but it's impossible to see in. Great for security but makes it a nightmare to see what the dogs are up to in there!

Just to clarify the rather simple physics here.

When you sit in the car, the light you see has come from the outside - in. So passes through the tints ONCE.

If you are stood outside looking in (trying to work out if that's Frank the local drug dealer or Bob his brother) the light you are seeing has to come from the outside - go through the window, reflect off Frank's shiny bonce and pass back through the window. So it has gone through the tints TWICE.

(Unless Frank is sitting there with a torch of course or has the internal light on for some reason.)

Hence it obviously looks a load darker from the outside than when you sit in the car.

The legality point stands though.

(Source: my car has ridiculous tints and I studied physics/common sense.)

My BM has a factory tint but I even put a very light smoke tint on my old Cayman that looked perfect imho. Didn't attract the attention of The Law, even when they had cause to drive it... hehe

I've got them in the back of my car - when we went to France, it meant my son could watch a movie / play a game / have a nap etc without having the sun in his eyes or on the screen etc.

Nothing to do with being a pimp or a gangsta - I just like not getting earache on long drives!

A decent quality film can reject up to 60% of the heat from the sun amongst many other things.

I drive a pickup truck. Heavily tinted rear windows means I can (sort of) leave things of value on the backseat - because I don't have a secure boot to put things in.

Tints in rain are horrible. Heavily tinted fronts at night, in rain, are plain dangerous.

Could I replace the glass in the front side windows with sheets of aluminium? Then have a thin strip insert of glass 2cm high and 20cm wide, made of course with non-tinted glass to allow 70% blah blah.

if you want a van, get a van.

Heavy tints at the rear of a car are a hazard - they prevent the following car being able to see through your car to the one in front.

Not that will worry the typical arsewipe who have them fitted, but there you go.

I was going to write a long reply, but can't be arsed, your argument is toss. So straight back at you arsewipe.
