What has happened to my wife seems very petty to me.

She drove 250 miles to Edinburgh to visit relatives and parked on the public road outside her Mum's.

The next day she noticed a sticker on her windscreen from Police Servant of Scotland, for Offence 21 for not displaying a tax disc.

1. It is for £100 which seems excessive.
2. You can see what has happened, the Tax Disc is there, it has slipped down.
3. A quick check would prove the car does have tax
4. Isn't it two months before these paper discs are discontinued anyway?

grrrr, not fair.

She has taken the picture on the day of the tax disc, and is going to appeal.

Will the nice person who issued this ticket have had to have taken a photo?

Harsh, I've got all 3 of my tax discs in my bedroom, keep forgetting to put them in. I'd certainly appeal it if possible.

30 what ?
Which VRN?
What type of vehicle is the alleged disc assigned to ?

Translation : tough. If that is a valid disc, it isn't displayed. The exemption isn't applicable yet.

£100 for that!? No wonder people have little respect for those in charge

Is it currently an offence carrying a £100 penalty to fail to display a tax disc?
Was a tax disc displayed as required by law?

QED.

The up coming rule changes can't come soon enough.

It's 2014 and we are still sticking bloody bits of paper to our windscreens.

What a joke.

Just as well it was Edinburgh plod and not the gloriously over the top and heavy handed Strathclyde plod. They would probably of towed the car and had it crushed before you can say "Irn Bru".

I had a friend `done` by the Police for same.
He stopped his van to use the cash point and his 4 year old son pulled the disc holder down from the front seat. He was charged with `failure to display`. He even lifted the disc up and argued his case. Sometimes the Police do themselves no favours.

That is definitely very petty, easy to check if a car is taxed electronically... Down our way we don't even routinely ticket for failure to display now for this reason!

I can't argue with your sympathetic reply but if the law is to be enforced, it should be enforced consistently. The tax disc for my motorbike is in my wallet. A police officer asked me whether the bike was taxed once, so I took the disc out and showed it to him - he was perfectly happy with that. It doesn't seem fair for such a different approach to have been taken here

Send it back to them with the picture and tell them that it has simply slipped down and you are not a tax dodging scum bag. They may reduce the fine.

Write and tell them you're of the travelling persuasion they're picking on you cos you've got red hair, and suddenly they won't want to know.

The tax disc barely visible in the VIN slot in the windscreen is not classed as displaying a tax disc, the car was not displaying a current tax disc, build a bridge & get over it!
