Just a question for those that may know, is it illegal to have no front numberplates?

I've noticed more and more exotica without them in my part of the world, North London. Invariably hi end new Italian. To be honest I was looking at one this morning on the way to work and couldn't even work out where you could put one beyond a sticky thing on the bonnet.

Before I get flamed in true PH style, I haven't got car envy, axe to grind etc etc, just got me thinking

Not sure where Speed Badger got the information above from but is has nothing to do with the UK.

The requirements for vehicles to be fitted with number plates are contained within The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001. Regulation 6 requires vehicles (other than motorbikes and trikes), first registered after the relevant date, to be fitted with front number plates.

£60 fine but no points if you get stopped by the BiB.

And it seems they do actually issue tickets for it from time to time, too....

And rightly so.
ANPR cameras detect/assist in the detection of many many, often serious crimes.
If there's no number plate, or an incorrectly displayed plate, then ANPR is almost useless.

Yea, and it's a PITA when it's a bike used. But points for sarcasm.

And not only that, if they think they can get away with just keep paying a £100 fine every time they're pulled, then they need to think again.

The bib / DVLA don't like continuous reg plate infringements. If the DVLA keep getting information about the same infringement on a particular vehicle, apparently they are not shy about removing the age-related plate from a vehicle, without so much as a 'by your leave,' and issuing a 'Q' plate instead.

Which would obviously cause problems come insurance and re-sale time.

Maybe the law should apply to all then.

Coming from the age when motorcycles did have front plates, just about, they were removed I believe to try and stop them spearing pedestrians.

It is a pain in the arse trying to fit something to the front of a bike, even L plates.

Maybe ANPR should concentrate more on identifying the vehicle and use cameras that catch the rear plate.

I've often thought that, use S172 to identify the driver.

Not really. DVLA do indeed look to remove plates if there is continuous violation - mis-spaced plates, mis-representation etc. So not displaying a front plate could see your £10k "personal reg" removed. Not saying it would neccessarily end up with a "Q" replacement, but if the plate is something special I know I wouldn't be doing anything that might see it get taken away.

Carry the plate in the boot. 'I'm on my way to buy some fixings for it, I think someone might have tried to steal it/I hit a badger/the screw broke when I was trying to tighten it'.
