Your links aren't working.
It does to the Eurocrats in Brussels. Couldn't possibly allow the Union Flag to be substituted for their precious circle of stars. Whatever will we think of trying next? 
The symbol is far more significant to them than the country letters. Which is patently ridiculous of course, but since when did a faceless bunch of ageing civil servant types in windowless rooms even think of, or care about, the obvious?

It's the flags of nine of the EU member countries. Nice easy and quick-to-identify-at-a-glance ones.
Four are green/white/reddish stripes.
Five are blue/red/white horizontal stripes, three with a fairly detailed "thingy" on. I didn't include the obvious vertical-striped similarity, even.
