I bought a car privately earlier in the month. The seller didn't have a logbook, as he said he was waiting for it to come through as he had recently bought the car himself. In hindsight, this was probably rubbish, and he had likely lost it.

Last week I decided enough was enough as he was being unhelpful about chasing up the DVLA for his logbook (surprise), so I applied for my own with the V62 form & £25 as I have no new keeper slip.
The tax on the car runs out on the 31st of August, and I haven't heard anything back from the DVLA (presumably they have to get in touch with the previous keeper to confirm he no longer owns the car?). I have just checked, and I could have taxed it at a post office using the V62 form & fee, but I have already sent this off in the hopes it would have come back by now.

Where do I go from here? The car is on private land, and I don't plan on using it until mid september as it needs some work, but obviously I'd like to avoid a fine.
Thanks

No, because I don't have the document reference number, and even if I did, they wouldn't post it to me, but the previous keeper.

i'd phone them fella, for all the bad press they get, the guys on the phone were very good with me a few years back when it, wouldn't let me tax my car online, they could look stuff up and took the payment over the phone.

they may be able to help this way to

I'm pretty sure you can't tax online or via phone until you have a copy of the V5 with your address on it - otherwise the new tax disc will go to the previous owner.

And then you need the V5 or the NKS to tax it at the Post Office.

I'd say you're buggered until you have either of the above - sorry.

A friend of mine tried this a few weeks back but the post office wouldn't let him do it.

AFAIK the PO is correct and the OP has been misinformed. The purpose of the V62 form is to apply to register the vehicle in his name and receive a V5C, not for taxing/retaxing it.

If you have just bought the vehicle and do not have a V5C, or V5C/2, you cannot tax your vehicle until you have a registration certificate (V5C) in your name. You can apply for a registration certificate using form V62 (fee applicable). DVLA will aim to deliver the registration certificate within six weeks. When you receive your new registration certificate, you can then tax your vehicle

The OP will not be able to lawfully use the vehicle on the road when the current tax runs out, nor can he declare SORN if the DVLA do not have him down as the RK on their records. When that point is reached he can if need be. Until then, the DVLA will be going after the seller for any applicable penalty they feel like imposing.

Not being able to use the vehicle is a PITA but that's what can happen when the V5C is missing. You have to wait for the DVLA mill to grind its tortuous way through the process. It may take six weeks to issue or it may be quite a bit sooner. It's pot luck most of the time. You just have to keep phoning them to try to find out how far it has progressed within the sausage factory.

This is what the .gov website says regarding getting a tax disc without a reminder:

You can apply at a Post Office that issues tax discs.
You’ll need:
a completed V62 ‘application for a registration certificate’ if you don’t have a V5C or if the V5C/2 is over 2 months old (and an application fee of £25)

Red Devil, it sounds like the onus is on the seller to inform the DVLA of the change in keeper? I can't see what more I could have done; it is just unfortunate that the tax expires this month. If my penalty will be to not be able to use the car until I receive the logbook, but have to pay the whole of Septembers tax, i'll be happy with that. Thanks thumbup

I have recently just had the same issue.

Quite simply i purchased the car the week before moving house and in my excitement i filled out the V5C slip to the wrong address. I simply forget about the V5C in the excitement of new car, and new house.

Fast forward six months i remember i have no V5C and tax renewal is coming up quick. I fill out a V62 with eight weeks to go and send it off to the DVLA with a promise of turn around within 4-6 weeks. They promptly lose it and subsequently leaves me in the end with a week or so to go.

Nice phone call to the DVLA and they inform me i can take it into my PO and fill out another V62 and get my car taxed at the counter without a V5C or reminder number. I just need to tick a couple of boxes at the bottom.

After explaining the situation to the nice person behind the counter and what the DVLA man said to do they gave me a tax disc. I paid the fee and they popped the form in the post for me.

Two days later my new V5C turned up. They hadn't lost my original postal order or V62 form.

It appears to be a matter of timing - https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploa...

Section 3
Why don’t you have a V5C?

(Please put a x against any that apply)
• I bought the vehicle from the previous keeper or motor trader and I have not received a V5C yet.
You should allow four weeks from the date you bought the vehicle before you use this form

Note F
You can tax your vehicle at a Post Office® branch that issues tax discs by using your V5C or V5C/2 ‘New leeper’s details section’. You may also need to fill in this form if you only have the V5C/2. If you do not have a V5C or the V5C/2 you will need to fill in this form and pay a fee. You can pay by cash, debit card, cheque or postal order (made out to Post Office Ltd.), Post Office budget card or by traveller’s cheques (in pounds sterling). If you are not the registered keeper of the vehicle you may not be able to tax until you get a V5C in your name

The implication is that you can only use this method if you still don't have a V5C 4 weeks after you became the owner of the vehicle which is why it worked for you.

Well, I received the V5 through this morning! However, it is wrong smash
Logbook says it's a 4 door saloon, but it's an estate. Everything else is ok.
Is this even worth asking about or am I going to need an Engineers report to certify the number of doors it has

Hmmm, correcting a V5c. I wrote a nice simple letter(cos short is good when you write to officialdom) to DVLC when I rebuilt the vintage car. Took them 3 months to respond, but in their defence, I did expect to have to take the car for inspection as I was correcting a mistake in the chassis number that went back to at least the 60s, if not 1930, their mistake with the engine number and a colour change. But I just got a correct V5c.

But I had of course used the V5c with the wrong details to tax the car so had another 9 months before I needed to worry.

That almost certainly goes back to the original dealer filling in the wrong details when the car was new...

Just fill in "bodytype" correctly, but it may flag changes up on HPI etc when you come to sell!
