I've nevered bothered to find out more as up to now it's been renew both when due. But I notice my insurance ( paid yearly in advance) is valid till mid October,as is my MOT, but VED expires at the end of September. I suspect cancelling the policy at the end of September would cost more than doing nothing. So ,what is my position if I just SORN at the end of September and leave my insurance to expire ? Or do I have to retax in September and SORN/get refund when insurance expires ?

You can SORN whenever you want. The rule is simple. You can not have road tax if the vehicle is uninsured, but you can have insurance whether taxed or not.

Thanks ,both. Loon- you should have a post in Government making Whithallese into simple terms. Problem has been solved by HMRC. Due to bungling on my tax codes (after assurances that I wouldn't pay tax), I've had a tax rebate more than enough to cover VED/ Insurance and MOT ( IF ALL'S WELL ). No wonder the country is in financial trouble. I'm on a fixed pensioner income. Four small annuities plus state pension, so HMRC know my annual income. Last year I received a rebate and my codes were revised. This year the rebate is twice that of last year. Personally I'm just pleased that HMRC don't work in the medical area. If they did, we'd see more rectal examinations for tennis elbow.
