Not really. major difference between 85 and 95 is you might not get stopped at all when doing the former.
Stopped by whom? Granted this thread is about someone being pulled over, however in 35k-45k miles in the past year on the motorways, I could go weeks without seeing a marked or unmarked traffic car.Fully take your point if you're in an area with active traffic patrols, though I'd hope to spot them before they spotted me.

Granted you may not have seen them. But more to the point how often have you been going fast enough for them to take an interesting you?Fully take your point if you're in an area with active traffic patrols, though I'd hope to spot them before they spotted me.

I do about the same and agree on marked cars, but I see a fair number of unmarked cars and presumably I miss some too.The thing I'm seeing a lot at the moment is laser speed detection off bridges - I know it's been around for years (I got done in Cheshire on the A500 10yrs ago) but the M42, M40 and motorways in the South seem to often have vans or tripod mounted lasers positioned just around bends and out of your normal eye-line.
Considering they can speed-check you at 1000 metres by the time you see them it's probably too late - I'm very cautious now if I'm pressing-on and see brake lights for no obvious reason ahead.

I don't understand how a ban can be preferable to points. If I had a choice between a weeks ban or 11 points then unless I wasn't planning to do any driving at all in the next week I'd go for the points every time. What are the chances of getting more points in the next three years? Most of us have never had any.

Driving for the next 3yrs would be scary enough if you got 6 points. Being on 11 doesn't bear thinking about.I was on 9 points for 6 months in my younger days and it was by far the least enjoyable driving period of my life. The 6 month totting up Sword if Damocles ban was nightmare. If I'd have been offered a shorter ban and a return to zero points, then I'd have taken them without a moments hesitation.

I'd be careful of that for insurance purposes - obviously different companies will vary, but some aren't bothered much about points whereas a short ban is a different matter altogether.
Speaking from experience, the one week ban added around £50 to my premium after ringing around a few companies.Same as 3 points does in the grand scheme of things.
One week of taking the train, then back to driving with no points.
Which was lucky as aboutva year later I got a 3pt speed camera ticket on an A road.
Has I kept my licence and only had 6 points originally that would have put me on 9.
A short ban is better than points.

My cousin was convicted for 125mph on the m6 toll last Tuesday. 6 points and £1200 fine. No lawyer, he just put his hands up, said he was a nob but needs his license for the commute. Very lucky.
Thats 4 x the fine Freddie got in his Bentley. Is the high fine meant to balance the absence of a ban?Mill Wheel said:

Is the high fine meant to balance the absence of a ban?As I lost my license this week for a similar thing what i can tell you is that my Brief did say that Staffordshire is the worst county at the moment for handing out harsh sentences for motoring convictions, I know as I got the max for the 101mph which was 56 days off from driving, its actually not that bad and i am getting used to my chauffeur taking me everywhere i need to go, and now i can drink without having to even think about the implications of driving etc! quite relaxing!
They aren't easy but there are some tell tale signs. Very clean, low spec even on the outside but high performance in the engine dept. Look through the car and there's a bit of clutter around the rear view mirror. No stickers in the rear window. Just too clean. These all seem to set my spidey sense tingling which has worked well for 15 years now.
