Because as soon as you asked to leave - the custody Sgt would want you straight out and wouldnt dither about deciding whether they wanted to talk to you about anything else or until they decided whether to let you out or not
Assuming the custody sergeant wasn't busy booking somebody in and dealing with the score of prisoners in the cells.

This thread is getting silly.
Getting? Got there ages ago.

I as interviewing officer would let them out - wouldnt need custody staff - theyre not under arrest so could be let straight out as a matter of courtesy i'd let the custody Sgt know what happened afterwards.

So absolutely no difference from being sat in the back of the car then.
"I'd like to leave now officer"
"No problem, just let me nip out & open the door for you"

We are now well into four pages of trying to explain to Bigends what he should already have known. Can't someone close this thread yet?

I wish I had had a means of recording a conversation whilst in the back of a police car.

I had a new Sierra Cosworth and was going down the M5. I had followed an old chap in a Metro for several miles doing about 60 in the outside lane. When he eventually decided to meander back to the safety of the middle lane I accelerated.

As I cleared him and a line of trucks in lane 1 I was disapointed to see a traffic car at the front of that little convoy.

I backed off immediately but they still pulled me.

I was in the back of their car having a discussion.

They said they were reporting me for doing 94mph.

When I pointed out that they could not possibly have measured my speed, the observer turned to me and said, " It's up to you sir, but if you don't accept the ticket, we will report you for doing over 100, which is an automatic ban in this county"

Now I realise people will say they were being nice by offering me a FPN, but there was no way I was doing 90 mph, let alone a ton and they knew it. And if they were trying to nick me for 94 why not report me for that anyway instead of trying to big up the reported speed?

Wish I had had my iphone, but back in the 1980's they were hard to find.
