Went for a night of hunting rabbits on a local industrial estate (11pm week night). A local, who obviously didn't want us there phoned the plod advising "there are 2 armed men breaking into industrial units."

We got in the car after an unsuccessful night hunting and started driving home, We got about 3 roads away from the industrial estate and out of nowhere we got surrounded by 2 liveried Corsa's, 2 traffic cars and a police van.

first thing we heard was "ARMED POLICE HANDS IN THE AIR".... we both stepped out of the car carefully hands raised. after being questioned and the gun checked we were allowed on our way. having MP5's aimed at you isnt the best feeling in the world let me tell you.

We carried on our drive and then my friend decided to let me know its his girlfriends car and he didn't have a licence/insurance.

somehow they were distracted by the gun and didn't do a check of his licence.

boxedin I was parked up late at night waiting for my brother and a drunk girl opened the passenger door and got into my car, then wouldn't get out! The police happened to drive past and see me trying to force a girl out of my car and asked me to sit in the back of their car to see what was going on. I was quite scared as it looked very suspicious! I've never been actually pulled over though, just that one incident.

When I had my little 50cc moped while at college I used to get stopped quite a lot, mostly because I had a full licence and didn't require an 'L' plate like all the other kids. Once they realised I had a full licence they let me on my way. It didn't annoy me as after all they're only doing their job.

Got pulled this afternoon, in the wife's car.

One of them was almost wetting himself with excitement, no tax, no MOT, and no insurance, he thought he has me on the lot.

Guess what I had spent all morning doing?

A few minutes with the paperwork, and a couple of phone calls, and he was massively deflated.

First time I've been stopped in over 7 years.

He even checked the tyres, lights, etc..., despite a 2 hour old MOT.

Pulled a few times after roadside radar traps all Sp30 offences, chased by a Met police motorbike at 6 am (thought they were still in the canteen at that time of day) convicted of 59 in a 40 limit.Pulled on the M25 a few times in "white van checks" never a problem.
The scary one was being grabbed by armed special branch officers as I came out of a phone box next to Uxbridge tube station , they had a photograph of someone who looked very much like me , I was released as soon as they realised I was not from 'over the water '. It was the eighties, at the time of many bombings and bomb scares.
I did shave off my moustache and wear my hair a lot shorter after that and stopped wearing a leather jacket for many years .

On the subject of the police getting distraction from the basic checks by a potentially bigger one.

My brother many years ago decided that he was going to by himself a 125 scooter so bought the bike then booked in for his cbt a couple of weeks later. This was fine until one day him and a friend decided to have a day in and proceeded to drink between them a 24 can crate of beer plus whatever they had in the fridge. When this ran out he obviously realised he had transport out side and not letting the small issue of no license, insurance etc he set off for the shop.

This didn't end well!

He ended up clipping a kerb, throwing himself through the air and impact a lamppost before the ground, in a 30 limit but he reckons probably doing close to twice that. So lying on the floor with a shattered leg, the police and ambulance turn up and after they had got hi in the back of the ambulance , he admitted to the police that he was very much over the limit having drunk far too much!

They were astounded, as was he when he then passed the breath test!

They then went on their way leaving him to go off in the ambulance! Nothing more was said!

I've been stopped quite few times because I drive a Type R. The most recent time I pulled out of the supermarket car park without my headlights on. I normally use the auto headlights function but because of heavy rain earlier I had put them on manual and forgot to switch them on. As the blue lights came up behind us my Mrs went apest at me for being so stupid and by the time the coppers pulled up they decided not to get involved as I was getting royally bked already

Got pulled in Slovakia a couple of years ago, after forgetting that headlights are compulsory at all times. Got a b.ll.cking, and learned that "svetla" is the Slovakian for headlight (or possibly "on"). Got pulled in LA on Thanksgiving Day 2004 on my way to the airport by a grumpy cop who was annoyed he was working, and wrote a higher speed on the ticket than I was doing, but a few years later I got a substantial speed reduction on a deserved ticket in Delaware. All in all, I'm OK with the overall picture.

My one and only stop in Britain in the early 90s was not a happy experience. The police made up anything that suited them so they could stitch up a 19 year-old in his dad's nice car.

Numerous times when I used to drive to work at 4am. Good to know there are people Loking out for your car if it was actually nicked.

Only had one silly one on a new ar where my plate was still according to the computer assigned to my old car. Pretty obvious to have I'd on you at that time in the morning. I didn't. The cop was really being a knob, and declined the offer to come into my office at a well known local firm where the security guard would cinfirm my id, and there would be proof in the office. He was very OTT and I did have a word with his inspector about his conduct. His boss told me he knew exactly who I was talking about before I gave him the collar number.

Generally good experiences.

From one or two early stops I'd get the odd flash of headlights as a "hello" from a passing patrol obviously recognising me, or the car.

As a student walking home in Hull one night I got stopped by two coppers wanting to know who I was and where I lived. It was cold and a mile walk so cheekily I suggested that if they gave me a lift I would show them. They agreed and we had a late night/early morning cuppa together in my kitchen.

Most police are decent people. Some have a genuine interest in just getting to know locals, who you are what you do, where you go etc.

Watch, I'll get pulled by a bd now and fitted up for speeding or worse. :-)

Only once.....way back in 1993, driving my knackered R5 GTL, freshly purchased but not yet taxed, got pulled over near Old Spitalfields, I explained this to the officer, who let me go, all nice and polite, clearly I wasn't that big of a fish to warrant further action.

Five times in all.

The only interesting one was blasting up the A46 south of Coventry at 6am on a Monday morning on my way home from my then girlfriend's in Bristol, went flying past a grey unmarked saloon only for the blue lights to come on. He was most polite, told me my rear nearside door was on the latch (it was) and asked me to stick "a little closer to the speed limit please sir". I'm guessing he was heading for the end of his night shift and couldn't be bothered.

I've twice been stopped and asked if I'd been drinking and then let on my way, once I forgot to turn my lights on in town at night and got a finger wagging, and once I'd forgotten to put the rear numberplate back on the car after I'd been doing some paintwork on the tailgate.

Best one was when I got lost in Birmingham coming back from a concert - this in pre sat-nav days - and seeing a patrol car parked outside a late-night chippy, stopped and asked him directions.
Him: "Have you been drinking by any chance sir?"
Me: "Do you think I'd have stopped and asked you for directions if I had?"
Him: "Fair point, you'd be surprised though" and then directed me on my way.

Edit: Oh, and doesn't really count, but 15-odd years ago I was without a car for a couple of weeks as my new lease car was late off the boat, so I bought a knackered Sunny from our local back street dealer for £150, its reg plate was D(something)AMY. Couple of days later a patrol car followed me into the village pub car park and the officer asked me if I'd like to sell the numberplate to him, as he was buying his daughter (presumably called Amy) a car for her 18th birthday in a months's time. So we agreed I'd sell him the whole car as soon as my new one turned up. I still feel a tad guilty that I made £100 profit out of it.
