Just need Breadvan to come in now, win them loads of compo so they can get the treatment for the kid without selling their home.
Now that the Medics have agreed to reconsider, if the treatment is not available in the UK, then they should have the costs picked up.

I don't think that follows. The doctors may still be right on the choice of treatment.

PS: the Trust will probably agree to pay up for the protons anyway, because they have put themselves in a bind through their OTT reaction to the parents' walkout. Omnishambles.

Maybe, but it is reported that they are reconsidering their opposition to Proton Beam Therapy.

It all goes via NICE guidelines. It's beyond the scope of my intelligence, but to get the treatment you want you need to understand them and manipulate your case towards them. Many ladies have used this to their advantage to get c sections when they don't fancy giving birth naturally, good on them as far as I'm concerned.

been out all day but listening to the 5pm news, massive back-pedaling all round.

I doubt we'll ever know the real reason the hospital were so against Proton Beam, if (as the inference is that it was about money?).

as said, I am sure the line "lessons will be earned" will be trotted out shortly.

I am also guessing PC plod who went on TV yesterday saying they had got it right etc etc is desperately trying to divorce himself from that interview now...

I think this is very clearly a case where Cancer Research have teamed up with the Police and the mainstream media in order to pressure the space lizards living in NICE's plush offices on the moon into offering photon torpedo therapy or whatever its called. And about time, too.

The Chief Constable's letter is quite pathetic. Truly we are ruled* by idiots.

I would be very surprised if NICE had anything to do with this case specifically....

I think it's more likely the trusts budget holders or consultant..

Now that really IS Space Lizard stuff. The excellent Lord Justice Munby says that the family court system operates inside a silo.

Oh, it was a silo. Well, more of an underground bunker. With lizards, many lizards.

Now, £50k in imaginary damages to the first person who suggests the parents did all this for the cash windfall their story will obviously deliver upon them.

Yes, and in a few months from now, the hospital trust and the police will quietly agree to pay the family substantial damages. All in all, another great day for the public purse.
And will pay out regardless of whether they are at fault or not as it will be the cheaper option.

Being serious for one second, a major problem with this type of clustery fk, is that some poor child somewhere is going to suffer, because arse covering individuals will avoid taking necessary action in case they are named, shamed and unceremoniously dumped upon as has happened here. To me the cry wolf effect is the most damaging aspect of the whole thing.

Unfortunately that's not going to happen any time soon, if at all. Just look around at what's been going on, in the public sector, mostly it's just the public that suffer.

Avoiding blame, rather than doing the right thing, is a major determinant of action in many public and in some private sector organisations. To some extent it has ever been thus (probably), but this culture seems to have become more pervasive over time.
