Just bought a new car and want to switch my insurance over to it.

My old car is taxed and MOTed and is sitting on the driveway. Do I still need to keep it insured or can I stop the insurance as long as I don't drive it on public roads?

Edit: police liaison officer says I don't need insurance or SORN. I'm confused ¬.¬

If it's taxed, it must be insured under continuous insurance rules.

If you don't plan to use it, SORN it and then change the insurance cover over.

If you're looking at selling your old car call your insurance company and explain the situation. They should temporarily insure your old car at a reasonable cost.

and don't forget if it's SORNed on your driveway it could still be stolen, so keeping it insured makes sense even if it's not legally required...

It's confusing

because I asked a police liaison officer who working for traffic control and he said as long as it has tax and is not taken on a public road, you don't need to insure it and don't need to SORN it.

And yet everyone on this forum says I need to at least declare it as SORN. Srsly wtf lol.

I sorned one of my cars a while back. My InsCo were quite happy to keep me on risk for fire and theft only for the duration.

http://www.mib.org.uk/Motor+Insurance+Database/en/Continuous+Insurance+Enforcement/default.htm explains it. The Motor Vehicles (Insurance Requirements) Regulations 2011 enabled some 2006 legislation preventing a car from being taxed but uninsured.

Could be 6 weeks whistle if the OP times it right wink .

Anyway, OP can't declare SORN until (s)he is the RK (how Kafka-esque is thatrofl ??) but a paper SORN application posted a week after the V5C was posted should cause no issues wink .

I'm glad I read that snippet of fun, have to be honest I wasn't up to speed with the law change until the letter arrived.

My daily driver has been off the road for about 5 weeks and 3 weeks ago I swapped the ins over to my old daily that I still own to use until the repair is complete which will now be early next week.

I rec'd a letter from the MIB noting it was unisured and the risk of a £100 fine, I even rang them up, no mention of clamping it or a day in court.

Somewhat annoyingly the letter arrived on the 2nd / 3rd Sept so one month was automatically lost and with it running out at the end of October putting it on SORN to get little back, needing to get it home from the Garage, (which should have been last week) meant I did nothing deciding to take a £100 risk.. not so sure now..

Somewhat ironic that it was parked with tax but un-insured for about 6 weeks back in May / June without a whsiper from the DVLA

Just to add I have no intention of driving it without insurance, will be swapping my current cover back over, that of course will mean I have to SORN the second car and loose tax on that one too.

While designed to catch the non payers which is a good policy its a nice little scam for the DVLA in unused VED..

Hope it's at least 4 weeks, I've only just insured my bike after a month of having no insurance.

Just an update:

I have declared it as SORN now just to be on the safe side. Good thing is I can claim back the last couple of months of prepaid tax biggrin

Thanks for that chriscpritchard

I have several unregistered semi and fully automatic guns at home. Just to add I have no intention of using them to shoot people.

I have several hundred kilos of heroin worth c£10m at home. Just to add I have no intention of dealing.

Cracking defence this one you've found.
