If I'm going to test drive a car from a small back street dealer, what proof should I ask for that the car is insured? Should I just go off what AskMID says?

I was thinking about asking for a test drive tomorrow, so checked the car on AskMID, which says its not insured. I check a few more cars from same dealer and none are insured. I checked other cars at different dealers and they all show as insured.

I should avoid that dealer?

They'll have a trade policy which'll cover any driver, any vehicle, being driven "in the course of their business". And a pre-purchase test-drive is definitely that.

Traders will not register every car in their possession on the MID.
Goodness gracious me...

I don't register every car on mid.

I am insured for accompanied test drives.

Most of my cars are turned over fast and I just simply don't have the time.

The dealer will have test drive cover on his trade policy, this covers you to drive his car third party on his trade policy.

Trade policies require stock to be loaded to MID within 14 days, not everyone does this.

Small back-street "trader". Really, definitely 100% guaranteed to play by the rules ?

Does the dealer need to be in the car for the insurance?
Does the dealer need to attach trade plates, or are they for when there is no road tax?
Does the car need to have a valid MOT?

I don't normally buy from dealers and my last experience was/still is unpleasant.

Trade plates are relating to tax, MOT will be needed to drive it on the road and the need for someone to be with you will be down to their policy.
