I did that. Didn't cost me a penny.

It was on a school trip in about 1998, I dislocated my knee. My sister was on the same trip and fell off a swing and broke her shoulder laugh I'm pretty sure she never had to pay anything either.

The trip was to Germany & Austria. I can't remember what side of the border we were on when the above happened though tbh.

did you actually show them your ehic card?

first thing you should do is present your passport and ehic card.

I've recently spent nights in hospitals in both Spanish and greek hospitals and in both instances, presentation of my passport and ehic card saw no charges for treatment and no need to rely upon travel insurance.

Pretty sure school trips had to have insurance as part of it. I certainly wouldn't go skiing without full insurance.

Did you have an EHIC card when you travelled?
If not, contact your insurance company, although they may have a dim view of you a) being drunk and b) not having an EHIC, which most cheap travel insurance deals state you must obtain and use.

If you did, call EHIC on 01912181999 and they will sort out the repayment,

Moral of story: always have EHIC card (and remember it expires)

No idea what the answer is, but great story, and enjoy the reaction when you explain to the ins company exactly how the accident came about!
And my luck, well i say luck, if i had had some luck i would have landed on my feet..... it was maybe around 11pm when i [cough] "hit my head" and as soon as i hit the floor, 4 doctors on push bikes which were passing stopped and checked me out!
Maybe they followed you from the bar with the express hope of picking up some business... smile

You're missing the point - even with an EHIC card you're not immune from having to pay the local going rate.

Sure, but in Germany this is only a small amount.

Different story in France for example, although I'd expect travel insurance to pay the rest.

Good for the Germans.

When is this country going to wise up and charge drunks who present to A&E?
Spot on. This would bring in an additional few billion to the NHS.

Snowboarding in France and got a scratch on my eye which made me light sensitive, which is bad when the sunlight reflects off everything when snowboarding.

Trip to local gp meant a got eye drops and 50 euro bill, had ehic but this wasn't covered and needed to pay before I was allowed the eye drops.

Why it's not done in the uk I will never know. Would stop my local gp being full of people with just a cold...
