AT the moment you don't have to have an MOT if your car was made pre 1960
Is this a rolling date ? changed at random or has it been like this for years ?
Many thanks

Yes - currently

There is a further government appraisal underway however to make it a 30 year rolling exemption - so don't bin that old Montego just yet

changed at random
every 5 years the dvla host a televised event, bit like when they do the football match draws

they set
the noise limits for exhausts
the number of days before you will receive an automated fine for no tax/insurance
the age of mot/tax exempt vehicles
the cost of transferring a number plate
the number of dvla offices which they are going to close
and most importantly, the % of letters which they will shred on arrival

I hadn't heard about this & hope it goes through. My current Land Rover missed the pre 60 by two months.

I would prefer there to be an MoT-lite for pre 1960 vehicles, with basic checks of structure and brakes and lights, but not all the other stuff that is hard to test on old jalopes.

Totally agree with this - at present it can be tricky finding an MOT tester that is familiar with older (but post 1960) vehicles and what they are/are not required to have/do, even under the present regs.

I completely agree with this.

My father has two cars that are pre-60, yet he has already said that both will be MoT'd every year, purely to ensure he hasn't missed something stupid.

I can't understand who the Government think they are appeasing by bringing this in? I wasn't even aware there was a call to implement this change by classic car owners...

For a classic car finding an honest but jalopy-friendly tester is important. Some bloke fresh out of the training course may fail the car on stupid stuff when it's actually roadworthy.

Like it being st and the owner needing a bit of a slap for wanting to drive it on the roads?

It came from 'Europe', if my memory serves (which it seems to do less and less nowadays hehe ).

As your father does, I'd have any pre-'60 car I owned MoTed annually anyway smile .

I believe some classic insurers also insist on the insured pre-'60 vehicle being MoTed scratchchin .

European harmonisation.

The worrying bit, though, is the possibility that the next stage of harmonisation will be restricted use for exempt vehicles and a requirement that they must be preserved exactly as they were when new.

Only indirectly. The relevant EU Directive allows member states to exempt pre 1960 vehicles from testing, but does not mandate this. The UK opted to make the exemption.

Not this old rubbish again? Don't believe the alarmist tosh published on various old car websites (a chunk of it seemingly originating from one poster, who is spectacularly wrong on this subject).

I didn't say it was imminent. I didn't say it will definitely happen. The idea exists and has varying levels of support across the EU.

So, the fact that the Commission has debunked the idea means nothing?

Given the dealings I've had with various bits of the commission, it's rare for any part of it to know what's happening at the next desk, let alone after the next election.
