Just noticed this on doing some checks on some cars i'm looking to buy on gov vehicle enquiry website
https://www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/

it is already stating at the top of the page

New keepers must get tax before using the vehicle.

i've only noticed this today, we are still over a week from when the new rules come in, so i should be able to buy one with the remaining tax as far as current laws are concerned, but this is suggesting otherwise

i know this has been a topic of question in a number of threads but this might shed some light on what really will happen, and could take the jam out of quite a few people's donuts, or it could just be a bit early that they've updated the webpage form

All explained here https://www.gov.uk/government/news/vehicle-tax-cha...

From 1st Oct if you buy a car you also have to tax it from that date. How much extra VED income is that a year? 1 extra month for every second hand car sold?

How would one go about taxing a car if buying on a sunday? I'd be surprised if they had a 24hr call line.

They have a web site - I would assume from 1/10 it'll be updated to allow you to enter details without being the registered keeper, although it'll probably be a typical IT project in govt and be months late....

It isn't the first of October yet, and this notice is being displayed now
it has been the subject of several threads and no one really knows what would happen if you bought a car now with tax, which under the current law is transferable, but by the time the change of keep form gets to someone at the dvla, the law will have changed.

Assuming the date of completion of the paperwork for change of keeper states prior to 1/10 then the existing tax should remain with the vehicle, assuming the seller doesn't keep it and cash it in (especially considering as you don't even have to return the disc, so worth stating on the receipt that includes tax to x date if buying before 1/10)

I'll keep the existing discs in the car windscreens till they expire - one runs till March the other till August 2015.

I can see a whole lot more speculative SORNing happening round here as people try to dodge the occasional attempts they have to catch people - reporting them does F all....

This is what DVLA is saying.

I feel sorry for all the traders who bought taxed vehicles and still have them on their forecourts. They're going to lose the value of every tax disc after 30/09 unless they re-register the vehicles in their name, adding a keeper and hitting their bottom line anyway!

I guess if you're in the market for something in one of the more expensive VED ranges now's the time to haggle...

You can buy online or using the 24 hour automated phone line - 0300 123 4321.

All this (and more exciting information) can be found in their webchat transcripts

the tax disc ceases to have any meaning at the start of next month
so if you buy a car with a decent amount of tax on it this week, the disc means nothing, if the dvla decide they are going to send a cheque to the current registered keeper, and mark the vehicle as untaxed, then there's not much you can do

If you buy it this week, you'll take the car, and the disk. The amount originally paid for the disk will dictate when further tax is due.

If the change of keeper is noted as being before 01/10 then the DVLA will NOT automatically issue a refund to the previous keeper.

If they were to issue a refund as you suggest you'd have a defence anyway, as long as you could prove that you bought the car, with tax, before 1st Oct.

Hopefully this will sort of make things easier, although i still see no reason to round up to the nearest month, why cant it be 6/12 months to the day you bought VED.

Another side effect is that dealers will no longer be able to use a car off the forecourt as a runaround without either re-registering it or using trade plates as a car in-trade is no longer taxed as soon as it's handed over to the dealer.

Going to be lots of car salesmen on the bus from 01 Oct.

Where is your source of this information?

the government vehicle enquiry website seems to disagree and has already started stating new keepers must get tax before using the vehicle,

That vehicle enquiry screen may suggest otherwise depending on how you read it, but as far as I'm concerned the changes don't take effect until 1st October so until that date you deal with tax the 'old' way.

If you buy a car before 01 Oct you "get tax" by buying the existing disc from the person selling the vehicle or they apply for a refund and you buy separately. From 01 Oct you have to "get tax" by buying new online, by phone or at the post office - the existing tax is no longer transferable when the vehicle is sold.

To make matters more complicated, if you sell your car to a dealer with tax remaining before 01 October and they sell it on after 01 October then you'll get an automatic refund of the unused months on the disc when it's sold. wobble

I'm getting my information from the links I posted earlier.

Cool. Thanks.

I was just imagining waiting for an insurer to update a database before you can tax your car.
