I am getting a new (to me) vehicle

They will be delivering it to my home on Monday next, the 29 September.

It is taxed from 1 October.

Would the team take it for a drive before Wednesday at 00:00:01 hrs?

Enough ANPR cameras around these days that say you'll be caught be at least one of them.

Depends on where you live. Not much ANPR in the more remote areas of the UK.

No chance ,mate. get someone to take you for a drive and count how many CCTV looking cameras you see on posts in strange places. Round /square cameras with a ring of Leds --that's ANPR. IT'S all about Tax avoidance in Tory Britain. VED (new name for road tax, to sidestep the tax on driving issue. Sure, no insurance is nasty, but in that case, HMG don't get the insurance tax.

It's from a main dealer so it guess it's "in trade"

It can sit on my drive and I'll just polish it. Don't want a fine. It's cash that should be spent of fuel for 400 thirsty hp

So rock and roll and edgy am I that, having bought an untaxed car on Tuesday, I taxed it yesterday morning so that I can collect it tomorrow. That's a whole £19 quid for four days use, or £4.80 a day. ZOMG!

It's tax evasion not avoidance.

It's been VED for decades but it still a tax one has to pay in order to use your car on the road. It is referred to as a tax on any relevant government site.

When I bought my new van I had the same experience. The dealer expressed total surprise that someone be so reckless as to spend £20 for the convenience of having the vehicle they needed immediately when they could wait a couple of days and save it that gargantuan sum! Very odd perspective, especially given the amount of money I had just handed over.

It's very PH to spend megabling on a car and then carp and cavil to save ten quid on it.

If the RFL has been paid till sometime in 2015, will ANPR show it as untaxed on the 29/30th September??

Update...

Seems the vehicle is taxed until end of Feb 2015. Salesman only found out when paperwork arrived with service books, etc.
He said they'd let me have it FOC. How kind.

As to being parsimonious with cash. The VED is £500 so it's almost £42 for two days.
It's not really the money though. It's giving it to the Government that sticks in my craw.

Make sure the change of keeper is dated September and not October else you'll lose it. And the garage couldn't
get cash for the disc anyway so don't feel like he's doing you a favour.

If your road tax is £500 a year then the car is pretty pricey especially with "400hp". Sounds like an M3 to me. So if you've bought a car costing a min £25k you're in for a surprise if you're struggling to find £42 when it comes to day to day running costs.

Yes, but it's ten quid that could go towards a speeding fine. wink

I think you will find its not insured before the 1st unless you have trade plates.
