I think you will find its not insured before the 1st unless you have trade plates.
If he's insuring it from the 29th, why would it not be insured until the 1st, regardless of the tax situation?

Update...

Seems the vehicle is taxed until end of Feb 2015. Salesman only found out when paperwork arrived with service books, etc.
He said they'd let me have it FOC. How kind.

As to being parsimonious with cash. The VED is £500 so it's almost £42 for two days.
It's not really the money though. It's giving it to the Government that sticks in my craw.
Make sure the change of keeper is dated September and not October else you'll lose it.
yes If the car was 'in trade' and the change of RK is dated October, the previous RK will receive an automatic refund of 4 months tax (November- February) from the DVLA. The new RK should be taxing it immediately. The key piece of paper in this case is the V5C/2 New Keeper slip. The date of transfer on it should be the same as the V5C.

And the garage couldn't get cash for the disc anyway so don't feel like he's doing you a favour.
It could if it re-registered the car to itself. Some may have decided to do this if they have a lot of money tied up in unsold stock which still has unexpired VED from when they acquired them and which they can no longer pass on. It depends on whether one extra keeper will cost them more in sale value than the value of the unreclaimable VED. The makes and ages of the vehicles will determine whether this is the case.

If you look at the DVLA blogs, there has been quite a bit of muttering in the trade (I suspect by smaller operators at the lower end of the market) that Swansea has been less than forthcoming in publicising all the nuances of the changeover.

Confusion over whether this is a new or used car. The earlier poster thinks it's a new car.

Car isnt reg until the 1st cant insure it until it on a domestic policy as i understand it. Car is not supposed to be used until the 1st.

Read the opening words of the OPs post. He says the car is new (to me). Hence it's a 2nd hand car and is long since registered.

Trade plates are nothing to do with insurance.

Enough ANPR cameras around these days that say you'll be caught be at least one of them.
What would that show? A car that's in the trade, it doesn't know who's driving. If the garage is no longer the RK then the OP is already breaking the law if he hasn't insured it so what difference would ANPR make?

Yes unless you sell it and change the keeper before the 1st of October otherwise you can't hand over the tax after the 1st as soon as you change the keeper the disc will be refunded to the original keeper
