I travel on the M3 every day and have noticed the new cameras in place for when the roadworks start. I've always thought the yellow masts with 3+ cameras on were average speed cameras which worked by recording your details from the front and timing your journey between them and another set somewhere else along the roadworks.

I've only ever seen them pointing towards cars recording images from the front however the ones that have appeared over the past couple of weeks seem to be geared up to capture images from the rear of the vehicle, I thought it strange that I've never seen average speed cams recording from the rear before.

Ok that makes sense, someone always has to come up with a sensible answer rolleyeshehe

I'm sure I read somewhere that they were going to be there as part of a "managed motorway" type thing? I don't know whether it'll be NSL or not, if it's kept at 50 like it is around the M25 junction at the moment then it's going to be a nightmare, it normally flows ok out of London for me and the main snarl up is the 50 limit, other than there it generally moves along nicely. Admittedly I only travel to Bracknell so about 15 miles.

It will be 50 mph through that whole section for the duration of the works (however long that maybe for?!!)

It is to become a 'smart' motorway rather than managed, ie 4 running lanes no hard shoulder.

The average speed cameras will be removed at the completion of the upgrade, but I imagine it will have the newest HADECS cameras on the new gantries instead!

Wonder whether that pointless 50 zone at the M25/M3 junction and for the first couple of miles of the M3 (going south) will disappear along with its specs cameras?

The only possible reason/ excuse I can think of for the 50 restriction is that coming out of London the M3 goes from 3 lanes to 1 at the M25 junction, traffic joining from the M25 then creates 2 new lanes after the junction. The issue with this is that the 50 zone doesn't end when there's 3 lanes again, it continues.
