All,

After some opinions on the most probable outcome of my speeding ticket if I may.

I was caught by a marked van on the A3 in Surrey doing 83 on a 70, no point trying to contest this as he had me bang to rights and it was my own fault (new car & an empty road) but I'd like opinions on the most probable outcome.

I've got 0 points on my licence at after 17 years and would prefer to keep it that way if possible so had a look online and understand there's 2 likely outcomes but welcome your views / advice:

A - 3 points and a £60 fine (I'm assuming 3 points but if someone could confirm it'd be appreciated).

B - A road awareness course (about £80-£90) and no points.

I suppose the main question is can I request the course when I reply to the original letter or does it have to be offered to me by return?

Apologies if these are silly questions but as above, I've not been through this before.

Thanks in advance

Mike

They are unlikely to offer the course until such time as they know who was driving and they've confirmed that the invitation criteria have been met - and that won't happen until you return the completed s.172 form.

Oh, and the Fixed Penalty for excess speed is now £100.

If you are in England or Wales and have not done a course in the last 3 years you should be offered a course for limit + 10% + 9mph, so 86 in a 70 (assuming you were in a car and not a vehicle subject to a lower limit). No points, about £80 - £100 and half a day of your time.

They should offer this provided you reply promptly (so that if you don't turn up on the day they still have time to take you to court if necessary).

The fixed penalty went up to £100 last year so it will be 3 points and £100 if a course isn't offered.

There's no harm in asking for a course but it should be offered anyway.

I may be facing the same. In a line of traffic how many cars can they do? Is it as simple as ping ping ping and each car gets done or realistically its just the front of a queue of cars?

Just thought I'd put an update to this, letters sent off and I've been given the option of the course which I've accepted.

83 in a 70?

Were you stuck in 3rd or something?

£100 fine and 3 points which your insurance company won't give two hoots about, or £90, a day off work and a speed awareness course that you'll have to inform your insurance company about anyway.

I wouldn't worry too much about taking the points, unless you drive for a living. I've had 2 separate speeding endorsements in 18 years of driving and neither resulted in any noticeable increase in insurance premiums.

Take the course - only admiral ask for speed awareness courses and why use up a life on license?

Half a day, you can do it on saturdays, and you might actually learn something you've forgotten or never knew
